The Availability Aspect Of Information Assurance

Submitted by: JB Lee

Methods of preserving information and information systems are what describes Information Assurance. It confirms availability by sustaining a prompt and reliable channel to material and information services for entrusted users. By producing systematic veritability, entirety and accuracy and continuity of the material and data structures of the operating system, hardware, software and banked material, integrity is supported. Integrity can likewise secure against forbidden variation and destruction of material. Information assurance also permits acceptance by assuring a place’s certification to acquire distinct material from the architecture, and also by accommodating the validity of a communication or a document and its producer. Confidentiality is confirmed by not broadcasting data to disapproved organizations or functions. Information Assurance confirms non-repudiation, which is supporting proof of transfer to the sender of data and dispensing validation of identification to the recipient, to require neither recipient can later contest having analyzed the data. Information Assurance also includes providing for restoration of information systems by incorporating protection, detection, and reaction capabilities.

Information Assurance guarantees availability by sustaining an up-to-date and trustworthy channel to material and information services for certified users. The users ought have reliable connection to all hardware, software, services and information. Availability should be assessed for the overall systems, not just in terms of what is accessible to only mission-critical systems.

There are particular design principles that can boost availability. Elements and subsystems need be able to be gracefully restarted unplanned. Subsystems and components must comply with an open architecture and be individual from one other. Subordinately critical missions or processes should be isolated from more urgent ones, as well as more high-risk processes from those that are subordinately sensitive. Networks, functions, and material organization can also be optimized for mission availability. The system can be conformed to securely upgrade availability such that platforms, software and framework are formed as services such as cloud computing. Proficient utilization of assets and attaining singular outages transparent to the end user are selected advantages of services such as cloud computing. The more redundant the architecture the more error-resistant it is.

Timeliness, associated with Quality of Service (QoS), is significant because too overdue could possibly be just as unfavorable as not at all. To be able to conform to timeliness specifications, sometimes asset allotment could be altered. There are frequently compromises between QoS foundations and Information Assurance specifications.

Measurement and metrics must help identify the originators of availability issues and have to also cover process flaws. If the management and users are not complying with a fitting process, this can alter end-to-end availability even if the hardware, software and services may be reachable. Processes could assess for a massively considerable percentage of system interruption, so they must also be assessed for in the measurement of availability. There are lots examples of metrics that might be analyzed for availability, including: Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR, How long and frequently each subsystem was suspended, How many entitled users there are and their access level, Portion the system is down or information is not obtainable, Percentage the system is stopped or data is not available due to Security complications, Percentage of CPU used for Security measures.

Staffordshire hoard goes on display in British Museum in London, England

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Some of the notable pieces from the gold and silver hoard which was found in a private field in Staffordshire, England by a metal-detector user have been put on display in the British Museum in the city of London.

A photo of one of the gold pieces found in the Staffordshire hoard

Approximately 1,500 pieces were found in July of this year; the discovery was reported by news sources in September. The value of the hoard itself is still being checked. 18 of the pieces have now gone on display in the museum in London, England, and can be seen by members of the public.

Fred Johnson, who is the owner of the land in which the hoard was found, said: “It’s been an incredible experience. I’m overwhelmed by it all. They say this will change the history books; it’s a strange thought that came from something lying in my field all this time. I’m trying to keep a level head about it. I’m trying not to think at all about the value of it.” Johnson will share the sum of the value of the hoard with Terry Herbert, who found the pieces. The hoard is believed to date back to the 7th century.

“People laugh at metal detectorists,” Herbert said in late September. “I’ve had people go past and go ‘beep beep, he’s after pennies’. Well no, we are out there to find this kind of stuff and it is out there.”

What is interesting about the hoard as a whole is all the objects are associated with war to some or a greater extent.

Michael Lewis is the deputy head of the Department of Portable Antiquities in the British Museum. Speaking to BBC News about this event, he said: “The view is that it was probably in some sort of container but that has not survived and it was deliberately hoarded, put into the ground, what is unclear is why, and I suppose what we find is they would have been objects that had been stripped from the enemies’ weapons.

“What is interesting about the hoard as a whole is all the objects are associated with war to some or a greater extent. What the hoard consists of is mainly gold objects, there are some silver ones, basically they have been stripped from whatever they were on for instance sword fittings. What it demonstrates is that the Anglo-Saxons as a people were very able to do amazing things with objects and I reckon people nowadays attempting to make these objects would have great difficulty in doing so.”

Finnish police isolate ports in Helsinki

Saturday, August 6, 2005

View of Helsinki

The Finnish police isolated the ports of Katajanokka and Länsisatama on Saturday. The ports were isolated at around 9.30 p.m. local time and the isolation was called off at around 11.30 p.m.

Finnish police received reports from Estonia that a shipping container loaded with explosives could be coming from Estonia Saturday evening. They checked every truck that passed the ports with the assistance of the Border Guard Service. There are still two ships due to arrive in Helsinki tonight, but they were already checked in Tallinn.

Adam Folkard and Nick Norton ready for more men’s softball

Monday, March 19, 2012Hawker, Canberra — Coming off a national championship win for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) men’s open team in mid-February, Australia men’s national softball team representatives Nick Norton and Adam Folkard are getting ready for more softball later this year, including the Australian club championships to be held in Brisbane in June.

Nick Norton at the ACT versus Japan women’s game Image: Laura Hale.
Adam Folkard at the ACT versus Japan women’s game Image: Laura Hale.

Folkard and Norton have both won the World Championships and have each won a total of ten national championships with the ACT side. They are both named to the current men’s national team, which has roughly thirty players, and believe they are likely to survive the December cut down to eighteen players who will represent Australia at next year’s World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.

The World Championship is one of the two most prestigious available to male softball players. The other is the International Softball Congress, an event Folkard and Norton have both competed at.

As national team representatives, there are a lot of expectations for them. In Australia, there is almost no financial support for the men’s game so they must cover most of their own costs, including travel to and from international competitions. According to Folkard’s father, these costs can be prohibitive. In one year, when Folkard was a representative on the men’s U18, U23 and Open team, it cost A$15,000 for travel and other expenses just for Folkard. When costs for bringing family members such as Folkard’s sisters to major international tournaments, the costs were even higher. Folkard, his father and Norton all joked this cost his father an investment property to allow Folkard to continue to compete at the highest level. Both Folkard and Norton currently work as tradesmen to support softball playing.

Beyond money, the national team requires players to be actively involved in wider softball community. Players must represent a club at the club championships in Brisbane if they want to retain a spot in the squad. Folkard plays for a Western Australian club and Norton plays for a Sydney based club, driving down from Canberra to play every Sunday during the season.

Folkard and Norton have both played softball at the highest level in the United States, where the men’s game is not yet fully professionalized but still presents more opportunities for players than are available at home. For several years, Folkard has gone to the United States for three-month stints, playing for teams in Chicago, Pennsylvania, and New York. One side he played was sponsored by Ernst and Young. Folkard currently plays for a Canadian side and has been trying to convince Norton, whom he has grown up playing softball with, to join him like Norton has done one previous season. According to Folkard, playing with a North American club has certain advantages. The clubs pay for his travel to and from Australia, and pay for Championship rings. When asked how North American clubs sign Australian players, he said they follow men’s softball in Australia and call up players to offer contracts. Australian men’s players gain additional exposure to potential clubs when they compete, with some sides approaching them during the North American season and seeking to contract them for the following season.

Both men would love the opportunity to play softball in the Olympics, but believe such an opportunity is unlikely. According to them, softball at the Olympics is a women’s game intrinsically linked to men’s baseball, and men’s softball is unlikely to ever be considered on the programme as a result.

Folkard and Norton both play for the same club in the ACT territory club competition. Their team has secured a grand final berth for the match in ten days. They are waiting to find out who they will play against based on a match this weekend. Both have previously won this competition.

Drink Green Tea For Health Of It, And How To Make It Taste Better Not Bitter}

Submitted by: Dina Garcia, RD, LDN

For most food or beverages I usually say Have it for your health not for the number of the scale. There really is no true diet or weight loss food. Same applies to green tea.

5 Tips to get the most nutritional benefit from your Green Tea

1. Drink it more often. If you are only drinking green tea on occasion you could be missing out on the daily antioxidant boost you would be getting from drinking 1-2 cups/day.

2. Choose a quality tea. Tea bags are okay but loose leaf teas tend to be a better quality (I cant say this across the board though). Either way stick with the real deal vs processed powders or pre-prepared bottled versions.

3. Brew it at the right temperature. Heat your water until it boils, remove from heat, wait a few seconds to a minute for it to cool a bit, then add your tea bag or loose leaf tea. To be more specific steep your green tea at about 175 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Brew it for the right time. Brew your tea for 3-4 minutes to get the most out of the tea bag. You can brew less if you want a lighter flavor. Be sure not to over brew or you will end up with a bitter tea.

5. Avoid adding milk. The protein casein in milk may bind with the catechins in green tea making them harder for your body to absorb. However, I do want to mention I am a huge fan of enjoying food and minimizing food rules. If you really enjoy milk in your tea then go for it, especially if it will make you more likely to drink it.

Green tea is very healthy and I happen to enjoy the taste of it just as it is. But many people dont drink it because they simply dont like it. Or they have to doctor it up with too much sugar or additives that they probably arent really benefitting. Unless there is a significant medical reason, I dont think we should force ourselves to consume anything on a regular basis if we really dont like it. That is why I have developed some delicious Green tea ideas and a recipe below:

Making Green Tea Taste Good

Be sure not to over steep your tea or you will get a bitter tea. Remember, suggested brew time is 3-4 minutes. Less if the flavor is too strong for you. More than that and it will be bitter.

If you cant handle tea without a little sweet then simply try to make it less sweet by using less sweetener, whatever that may be. So in other words dont go cold turkey and just cut out the sugar, just try to use less.

Add a splash of juice to your brewing water to give it a little sweetness.

Try a flavored green tea

Add fresh mint. This is one of my favorite! Especially when I am going to turn it into iced green tea. It takes the bitter edge off of the tea and gives it a slightly sweet and very refreshing flavor. My kids beg me for it.

Spiced Apple Green Tea

Ingredients:

2 apples, cored and cut in thin wedges. (Sour varieties work best such as granny smith)

3 lemon slices

2 orange slices

4 cinnamon sticks, broken in half

2 cloves

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/2 teaspoon ground ginge

8 cups wate

2-4 green tea bags

Directions:

Put all ingredients, except tea bags, into a crock-pot and cook on high for a few hours. This will also make your house smell warm and inviting. Turn the heat to low. Add the tea bags and allow to steep for 3-4 minutes. Strain (carefully!) into a pitcher or tea pot and serve hot.

Chef’s Tips: Mix things up and use this combination with original tea, black tea, white tea, or even herbal teas. I even like to swap the spices for some fresh mint.

National Park Service covers donation box at United Airlines Flight 93 memorial

Friday, June 8, 2007

On June 7, Mike Svonavec, the owner of the land in Somerset County, Pennsylvania where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001 has a US$10 million price tag for his property which is sought by the group, Families of Flight 93 and the United States National Park Service, (NPS) for building a memorial dedicated to those on the plane. Svonavec also placed a box on the crash site temporary memorial, where visitors can leave a “donation” to pay for his asking price for the land as well as the cost of providing security at the site.

The NPS has covered the donation box with a trash bag and told Svonavec in a letter to remove it by the end of Friday June 8, but Svonavec said that he will not remove the box.

“I have no intentions of removing the box from my property. My only plans are to try to cooperate with the Park Service with regard to the sale of the property,” said Svonavec.

Svonavec accused the NPS of trying to take over his property after they placed the bag over the box.

“It’s just unbelievable to my mind that that’s the direction they would take, taking control of the property like a guest would at your house,” added Svonavec.

“The bottom line is we feel the National Park Service can’t effectively carry out our mission without exercising the exclusive use and control of the site as provided for in our agreement with the property owners,” said Joanne Hanley who is the Superintendent of the memorial.

Although NPS tour guides are telling tourists and others who visit the memorial, they are shocked to learn that the money they donate is going to Svonavec and not the memorial. “They’re alarmed that they may have given their money to something that they didn’t want to give their money to,” said one of the 43 guides who volunteer at the memorial, Donna Glessner.

The land is currently under contract with the NPS and the memorial is allowed to be on the land according to an act of the United States Congress who in 2002 authorized the memorial to be placed on the land.

Currently, the U.S. National Park Service only owns approximately 60 acres of the land. PBS Coals Inc. owns 864 acres of the land and Svonavec owns 273 acres. The entire field is nearly 2,000 acres.

Wikinews interviews organiser of New Zealand’s Rock2Wgtn festival Phil Sprey

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

File photo of KISS, who headlined night one. Image: Wok.

Across Easter weekend Wellington, New Zealand was host to Rock2Wgtn, an international two-day hard rock festival. Large crowds showed up at Westpac Stadium to see the various acts. The world has never seen an event of this kind before.

Day one featured three theatrical acts. Finnish band Lordi, known for their monster costumes, opened the night. They were followed by the US shock rocker Alice Cooper, whose themed set included the horror theatrics regularly associated with him and a hanging stunt he recently restarted after a gallows collapse nearly killed him two decades ago. The night was headlined by the distinctively costumed band KISS, complete with their famed black-and-white makeup.

The first major act on the stage on day two was the American hard rock/glam metal band Poison. After Poison, British act Whitesnake took to the stage and performed their set to the crowd. British-born American rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who, as well as a solo career, fronts the world-famous Black Sabbath, was the second night’s headline act.

The festival’s entertainment did not stop at the six main acts. There was also support performances from three New Zealand bands – The Symphony of Screams, The Valves and Sonic Altar. Their sets were accompanied by a special effects package from award-winning studio Weta Workshops, who are known for their work on movies such as The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. This came in the form of ‘Drusila the Dragon’, which rose up to a height of six foot and wigspan and moved for the audience, shining lasers from its eyes and breathing red smoke. Flame Fire Productions were hired to put on a fire show featuring several dancers alongside the performers. Also performing were six local guitarists and a group of ‘zombie‘ cheerleaders.

Despite the crowds that flocked to the event, however, it has recently become apparent that financial trouble has hit the festival. Although figures remain to be confirmed, an estimated NZ$750,000 has been lost.

Wikinews secured an exclusive interview with Phil Sprey of Capital C Concerts, who organised the festival. The entire interview is now available below.

Family seeks prosecution over loss of UK Nimrod jet in Afghanistan

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Following a new report into the loss of a Nimrod jet belonging to the UK’s Royal Air Force over Afghanistan the family of one of the victims is seeking a criminal prosecution. Sergeant Ben Knight, aged 25, was among the fourteen killed when Nimrod XV230 crashed in 2006.

Knight’s parents have applied via their lawyers Smithfield Partners to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider evidence contained in a report by Charles Haddon-Cave QC, who is due to appear before the House of Commons next month. The Loss Of RAF Nimrod XV230, A Failure Of Leadership, Culture And Priorities stated that the accident was preventable and that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) made spending cuts a priority over safety. A 2005 review into Nimrod safety was “riddled with errors,” the report found.

Smithfield Partners have also written to the Health and Safety Executive, asking for the MoD to be investigated for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The letter was addressed directly to deputy chief executive Kevin Myres.

XV230 had shortly completed air-to-air refueling on September 2, 2006, when it was destroyed by an explosion. “We had a 25-year-old healthy son, who used to play squash and, to put it bluntly, he ended up as a plastic bag full of bits,” said Graham Knight. “That is something which is very hard to cope with.”

The Knights met Armed Forces Minister Bill Rammell in London yesterday. Rammell said he was unable to comment on possible legal action against individuals, but promised to provide answers to other questions posed by the Knights and other families. The Crown Prosecution Service has promised consider the matter, and the Health and Safety Executive said it could not comment this early on in developments. The latest report names five people in the MoD, three with BAE Systems and two with defence company QinetiQ, as responsible.

Freestyle Food And The Rest

Submitted by: Mark Plummer

Whilst most forms of holiday have contracted during the recession, the cruising market has continued to grow, with an estimated 1.65 million Britons set to cruise in 2010, up from 1.5 million in 2009. So when all other holiday sectors have been moribund, what is driving the popularity of cruising?

In years gone by, cruising was perceived as being overly formal, associated with stuffiness and also expensive. To be fair this perception was in the past not too far from reality, and a constraining factor on its popularity. However cruise lines have worked hard to shed this traditional view of cruising, both in terms of the new products which they have created, and the marketing campaigns that have been targeted at a much wider audience.

Younger couples and families are two of the market sectors that cruise lines have specifically aimed at in recent years, and they have been very successful in broadening the appeal of cruising.

It is interesting to delve a little deeper and look at what is enticing these new first time cruise customers to the market? Flexibility certainly seems to play a big part, on a number of dimensions.

Firstly, there is much more dynamic approach to dining options. For example, Norwegian Cruise Lines have put “freestyle cruising” at the heart of their customer proposition, and claim that there’s only one thing to do with the rules, and that is scrap them! NCL make a big play of having no dinner bells, no dress code for dinner, and will ensure that you don’t have to sit with strangers unless you want to. They also boast more restaurants and dining options than days of the week.

For those that cruise regularly, when asked what is really important to them on a cruise, they are likely to put eating and restaurants right up there. One word that often puts many customers off is “buffer style”, conjuring up awful images of pork pies, cold quiche, egg and cress sandwiches with the edges curling up! For others it’s the dread of having to dress up in a dinner suit and bow ties that turns them off. But this is the antithesis of what you will find on the majority of cruise ships nowadays. Flexibility is where it’s at, when it comes to dining. Even Cunard, which is seen as being probably the most formal and traditional cruise experience, has freestyle dining with The Lido, and trust me; you would never see a pork pie on display!

Turning to Royal Caribbean, one of the biggest players in the cruise market, they have been driving the product innovations agenda with onboard activities including rock climbing, ice-skating and on some ships their Flow-Rider surfing experience. On the food front, there’s an array of options from freestyle right through to formal. Breakfast and lunch is “open sitting” where you just turn up when you’re ready and no reservations needed. Dinner is more organised with an early and late sitting. The American guests tend to opt for the earlier option with Europeans preferring the later sitting. The usually have some themed nights and some where you dress up more than others, but you don’t need a tux. At these dinners there’s a five course menu with healthy and low fat options also available. They also offer a discount wine deal if you pre-book for the week, which works out at really good value (you only have to commit to ordering some wine each night in a certain category, and can still select your actual bottle each evening whilst you order your food).

In addition Royal Caribbean offers for a small upgrade fee of $20 – $25, speciality Restaurants, Portofino and Chops Grille. Chops Grille as you can imagine offers steaks, mixed grills and seafood to order. Portofino is an Italian restaurant with a romantic feel to it, and offering high class Italian cuisine with a good degree of imagination. If you’re there with a big family and fancy one night of intimacy, this is highly recommended, but don’t leave it too late in to the cruise to book it, as they are popular options.

At the other end of the spectrum if you fancy more casual dining then head for Johnny Rockets. Those who remember “Happy Days” could just imagine “The Fronz” aka Henry Winkler pitching up at this brilliantly re-created American 50’s style Diner. Burgers, fries and shakes are the order of the day, okay it may not be healthy but it’s great fun and at an additional charge of $3.95 per person, it’s great value.

Asian style Alongside Royal Caribbean’s main all day opening buffer Windjammer restaurant is “Jade” their Asian themed buffet, offering Thai, Indian and Chinese – the preferred choice of most Brits these days!

P&O’s latest addition to the fleet – Azura, has gone one step further and made it’s jewel in the culinary crown, “Sandhog” offering an Indian and British food fusion, created by the first ever Micheline starred Indian chef Atul Kochhar. The restaurant has an open theatre styled galley which is visible to diners – a growing trend in fashionable restaurants these days. P&O is often perceived as a very traditional cruise line, but as you can see they too are innovating and challenging these perceptions.

Onboard Azura, if you’ve finished eating and are ready to move on for a drink, there are various options. Continuing with the Asian theme, there Malabar a club styled bar which recreates the trendy hotels on Marine Drive in Mumbai. For those looking for something closer to home, there’s The Marquis which resembles a classic British pub, featuring plasma screens showing music videos and sporting events, plus a pool table. For those looking those undiscovered gems in the wine rack, there’s The Glass House which has been developed by the enigmatic and larger than life wine buff Olly Smith, where you can take part in wine tasting sessions. What better way to finish the day?

Wikipedia founder speaks at US law school

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

Pound Hall at Harvard Law School, where the event was held.
Jimmy Wales and Samuel Klein discuss rcbirds before the talk.
Samuel Klein, in black and red at right, describes the Bambara Wikipedia project.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales spoke at the Harvard Law School tonight with a presentation titled “Wikipedia and the Digital Divide.” Projected on a screen behind Wales was a running list — in real time — of edits to the German and English Wikipedias. Over the course of the hour, the list showed changes to topics like “Time Travel,” “Dante Alighieri” and, in German, “The Maronite Patriarchs of Antioch.”

Wales started with a summary of Wikipedia’s goals; the bulk of the time was given over to questions from audience members. Approximately 65 people listened to Wales’ remarks. According to a hands-up poll that Wales conducted at the start of the event, about half of those present had edited Wikipedia before. Six of those counted themselves as “Wikipedians,” a title Wales suggested than anyone who’s edited the Wikipedia even once should consider.

Before the event, Samuel Klein demonstrated the program, RCBirds, that created the running list behind Wales. RCBirds plays a bird call in response to each edit made to Wikipedia. Wikipedians edit constantly; one attendee found the frequency of bird calls distracting and asked Klein to turn down the volume on the program.

Wales ran through some quick statistics about Wikipedia:

 • Wikipedias exist in roughly 200 languages, but most of those are dormant.
 • The five largest, in order, are: English, German, Japanese, French, and (“You’ll never guess,” said Wales) Swedish. One attendee suggested, to general assent, that there was little else to do during long, dark winter nights.
 • Over 20 languages have more than 10,000 articles.
 • Over 50 languages have more than 1000 articles.

Though the Chinese Wikipedia has over 25,000 articles, according to Wales, the Hindi and Arabic versions are smaller than Wales would like. Referring to those two editions, Wales said that Wikipedia is, “not so strong where we really need to be.” Wales added later that the Chinese government has blocked access to the Wikipedia twice; once during the approach to an anniversary of Tiannamen Square, and once for no discernible reason. “We could make a big deal out of being blocked,” said Wales, “but we’d just score points with the western media, and it wouldn’t get us any closer to our goal.”

Wales described the organization behind the Wikipedia as an “International Red Cross of information,” able — and impelled — to work in a neutral fashion with governments and NGOs. When asked about reaching out to the UN, however, he said that he had been warned by a Dutch minister that large bureaucracies tend to be comfortable working with other large bureaucracies; the Wikipedia employs only Wales and thousands of volunteers.

Wales cited three factors that correlate with Wikipedia growth:

 • Economic wealth
 • Degree of penetration of internet
 • the number of people who speak English

On the topic of the Hindi Wikipedia, Wales attributed the lack of growth to the prevalence of English keyboards. He said that when he has asked Hindi Wikipedia contributors what made the task difficult for them, they said that they were, “not used to typing Hindi.”

“I don’t know how to help with that,” Wales said. He hoped that the situation would improve.

At this point in the talk, Wales opened the floor to questions.
