Seattle shooting leaves seven dead

Monday, March 27, 2006Seven young people are dead with two more hospitalized in Seattle, Washington, after a murder-suicide shooting Saturday morning in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The gunman, identified by police and witnesses as Kyle Huff, 28, left a party briefly to retrieve a pistol-grip shotgun and a handgun from his nearby truck. When he returned, he started firing. He turned his shotgun on himself when apprehended by a police officer on the porch of the house where the shootings took place. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the dead as Jeremy Martin, 26, Christopher Williamson, 21, Jason Travers, 32, Justin Schwartz, 22, Suzanne Thorne, 15, and Melissa Moore, 14.

No altercation was reported at the party, and no motive has been identified for the killings. Before returning to the party, Huff spray-painted the word, “now,” on the sidewalk, and on the steps approaching the house. Seattle police officer Steve Leonard heard the shots, and arrived on the scene to find Huff emerging from the house. Huff was warned to drop his weapon, at which point he aimed his shotgun at his own head and fired.

Three of the victims were killed in the living room, and another two were found dead on the porch and steps of the house. Another died at the hospital. One of the hospitalized victims was initially reported in critical condition, but was upgraded Monday morning to satisfactory condition.

Huff, originally from Whitefish, Montana, had been charged in 2000 with felony criminal mischief for firing on a sculpture with a shotgun, according to Flathead County, Montana Sherriff Jim Dupont. Police found an assault rifle, a machete and ammunition in Huff’s truck, and a search of his North Seattle apartment turned up three more rifles.

Chicago Car Dealers Insurance, Coverage Issues And Prices

By Ed Sneineh

Chicago Car Dealers Insurance, Issues And Prices

Do all used car dealers need insurance?

Definitely. All new and used car dealerships will need to have some sort of garage insurance policy that must be filed with the state by the insurance carrier. A cancellation of their insurance policy will end up in a suspension of their business license granted to them by the state. Used car dealers insurance in Chicago is the law.

What form of coverage do you need?

Necessary Coverages:

Car dealers need a garage liability policy covering the business as well as the workers, sales persons of your business (who must also be listed on the policy) in the events your business conduct as a car dealer result in damages to the properties of others or harm to their body. Neither you, nor officers of your business, or employees are covered under any bodily injury or property damage coverage provided by the garage liability. The minimal level of garage liability insurance in Illinois is a split limit of $100,000/300,000/50,000, also expressed as [100/300/50]. These numbers stand for the max totals that your insurance company will spend on your behalf for bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident, property damage per accident; correspondingly; in the event that you, your business officials or reported employees cause any at fault accident in relation with your dealership actions. Certain companies offer this minimum as a Combined Single Limit (CSL) of $350,000 bodily harm and property damage per accident, which is normally more expensive than the split limit. Used car dealers that operate larger operations should be worried about liability limits. The author suggests a million dollar as a combined single limit.

Price of garage liability relies on many issues including limits of garage liability insurance, geographical location, number of dealer plates (some companies verify it with the state); and number, ages, MVRs of each operator listed on the policy. A used car dealer insurance policy with minimum plates and most desirable conditions to the issuing company will be approximately $3,000 per year in the City of Chicago. It is less expensive in the suburban areas of Chicago. Nevertheless, extra discounts may apply such as experience with no loss. Also there might be more surcharges if there are younger drivers or if you have employees with not good driving records.

Sometimes the City of Chicago may also ask you to show a evidence of driveway insurance. Typically it is set at $1,000,000 by the City. Certain garage policies issued at lower liability limits in the City of Chicago may be endorsed, for a minimal additional charges, to satisfy the requirements of the City of Chicago. Nevertheless in other conditions, you might need to get a separate policy for that if your policy does not provide that protection.

Illinois Workers Compensation is a very important coverage, one that is also very well missed by car dealerships. You need workers compensation for your dealership in order to meet your legal and moral obligations towards your company and staff. Officers and owners of the organization have the option to include or exclude themselves from workers compensation coverage. In case they want to be excluded (perhaps they get wage and do not do any real work at the dealership) they have to sign some exclusion form. Keep in mind that no employees/contractor/ officer of the dealership is protected for bodily injury in connection with any at fault auto accident related to the measures of the dealers. Coverage for employees for these situations are delivered under a workers compensation policy.

Workers compensation premiums are based on how much salary you will pay in the next 12 months. It has nothing to do with the past. People covered include all the staff with W2s (must include by law), contractors with 1099 (can be excluded only if you can show that they have workers comp coverage on their own) and directors/ owners of the business except if specially excluded. For independent contractors (i.e. drivers who transport autos from car auctions to dealership) they have be added unless they show you that they have workers comp coverage somewhere else. It is tough to estimate fees of workers comp because it is based on future payroll. For that reason, your insurance company gives you an estimate in the beginning, then it will audit your wage towards the end of the policy term, after which date they will tell the final premium. For that reason, you might be charged extra, or simply get a returned premium, at the end of the policy period for the previous policy!

Bonds: A used car surety bond is normally required for new used car dealer ventures which are less than three years. The value of the bond is $20,000. The bond is some kind of guarantee by the bonding company that the used car dealer will adhere to the guidelines set by the State of Illinois. A major issue related to bond is its price. The price of the bond could vary from $200 to $2,000 depending on the credit of the Principal on the bond (owner / partners of the dealership). The vast majority companies will not issue bonds for people with severe credit troubles. Keep in mind that any government organization may ask for a bond. For example, Cook County Treasurer may require a Chicago used car dealer for a bond to guarantee payments of sales tax! This could be brought on by situations related to the experience of the tax authorities with particular places, old owners of business, or new owners/ officer.

Non Mandatory Coverages

There are some optional coverages that used car dealership may be interested in, based on their wants.

Dealer Open Lot refers to the collision and comprehensive coverages on dealer owned autos. There is normally a limit set on coverage per auto. So if a dealer acquire a dealer open lot coverage with $150,000 per site, that policy may limit coverage per vehicle of $25,000. Dealers must analyze their policies.

One of the source of trouble is related to the Coinsurance Penalty Clause. To reduce premiums, a used car dealer may get dealer open lot coverage of $100,000 on his/her lot which has $400,000 of used cars. The coinsurance penalty ratio is the ratio which is used to figure out if a particular dealer is properly insured or not. Coinsurance percentages range from 80% to 100%, and they are normally stipulated on the policy declaration page. In the previous scenario if the customer has 80% coinsurance, then the dealer must keep at least $320,000 to be rightly insured. If the dealer maintains lower than that amount, then the company will provide only partial payments on the claims made, because the client was paying partial payments in relation to what he/she was supposed to should have paid. The amount the company will pay is based on the rate of what the customer currently has [100,000] divided by the minimum that was supposed to be carried [320,000]. In other words, the insurance company will pay about 31.25% [100,000/320,000] of any potential claim, after the deductible!

Your business also needs Garage Keeper Liability, if you work on autos that you do not own, such as customers who bring their cars for minor repair work. Vehicles that you do not own require physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision) with certain deductible ($500 to $1,000). Garage Keeper Liability insurance is not needed if the dealer does not perform any maintenance or repair work on vehicles they do not own. Garage keeper liability is not an expensive coverage and is based only on the amount of coverage you need. Normally the minimum amount is $25,000 per car. The difference between $25,000 and $50,000 in coverage is very minimal. You can tell how much you need by knowing the average value of all automobiles that exist on your lot which you do not own.

There are other elective coverages that used car dealers may need. These include coverage on Building, Business Property, Security, Business Income, Crime (Robbery etc.) and some forms of Professional Liability.

Cardiff student union calls for cancellation of lecture by Germaine Greer

Sunday, October 25, 2015

The Cardiff University student union has called for the cancelling of a November lecture by feminist author and academic Germaine Greer, following comments about transgender star Caitlyn Jenner and other trans women that they have labelled ‘transmisogynistic’.

In an online petition, women’s officer Rachael Melhuish asserts that Greer “…has demonstrated time and time again her misogynistic views towards trans women, including continually misgendering trans women and denying the existence of transphobia altogether.”

The petition adds that while debate should be encouraged in universities, Greer’s ‘problematic’ views of trans people, especially trans women were dangerous.

It happens to be an opinion, it’s not a prohibition.

According to The Guardian, in an interview on BBC2’s Newsnight Greer said that Jenner had stolen the limelight from other women in the Kardashian family.

“It seems to me that what was going on there was that he/she [sic] wanted the limelight that the other… members of the family were enjoying and has conquered it, just like that,” Greer said.

According to SameSame.com.au, Greer defended her previous statements denying that trans women were ‘real women’.

Greer stated that she believes she is being pressured not to talk about trans people because of her belief that ‘post-operative’ trans women are not women. “I’m not saying that people should not be allowed to go through that [gender reassignment] procedure,” Greer said.

Greer clarified her position by stating that “It happens to be an opinion, it’s not a prohibition.”

This is not the first instance where Greer’s statements about trans people has come under criticism.

In 2012, New Zealand Lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) advocacy group Queer Avengers ‘glitter bombed’ Greer at a book signing in Wellington. According to SameSame.com.au, the group said at the time: “transphobic feminism is so 20th Century. It wasn’t okay then and it’s not okay now.”

Homeless Columbus, Ohio man with ‘god-given gift of voice’ becomes YouTube sensation

Friday, January 7, 2011

Ted Williams, a former radio announcer from Columbus in Ohio, United States, has become a YouTube sensation after a video of the homeless man talking to a local reporter was uploaded onto the website.

In the YouTube video, he can be seen standing on the exit ramp of Interstate 71 at Hudson Street, holding a sign claiming that he has “the god-given gift of a great voice” and that he had “fallen on hard times”, as well as speaking to Doral Chenoweth III from daily newspaper The Columbus Dispatch. Upon being asked to “[s]ay something with that great radio voice”, he replied: “When you’re listening to nothing but the best of oldies, you’re listening to Magic 98.9. Thank you so much. God bless you. Thank you. And we’ll be back with more right after these words.”

In the video, Williams also mentions how “alcohol and drugs and a few other things became a part of my life and I got two years clean and I’m trying hard to get it back.” This video achieved in excess of eleven and a half million YouTube views since the video was uploaded on January 3, 2011. However, the original video has now been removed because of a copyright violation claim made by The Dispatch. Copies of the clip are currently still available to view online.

I’m just so, so happy. I had no idea that something like this would have ever happened to me. It’s phenomenal.

Subsequently, Williams received interest from companies wishing to offer occupations, including Ohio basketball team Cleveland Cavaliers — who offered a house to him — and NFL Films, according to the Associated Press. Stating that “It’s that voice,” Kevin McLoughlin described: “When I heard him tell his story, I said, ‘That’s what we do. This guy can tell a story.’ Somehow, some way, I need to get a demo with him.” McLoughlin also believed that “[t]he man deserves a second chance”. Kraft Cheese have also made an announcing job offer to him.

When asked about the effect of this YouTube sensation in an interview with CBS News, he exclaimed: “It’s just sensational for one, it’s numbing for another, overwhelming … It’s just amazing. … Well, I’ve already been characterized as Susan Boyle. … I’m just so, so happy. … I had no idea that something like this would have ever happened to me. It was like, almost, winning the Mega Ball lottery. … It’s phenomenal.”

Having attempted to make contact with his mother, aged 92, in New York, Williams met with her for the first time in approximately twenty years in a hotel in New York, New York on Thursday, according to msnbc.com. He greeted his mother by repeatedly saying the words: “Hi, mommy.”

This story has been likened to the occasion when Susan Boyle became a YouTube sensation in 2009 after a video of her audition on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ was uploaded there. The video was viewed over nine million times within the space of five days.

Lunch Boxes Preserves Freshness Of The Food

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

On remembering ourschool days, the fun and frolic during recess is incomplete without the lunchboxes. Those little goodies tucked away in little boxes are one of thefinest memories of our childhood. Even today the trend continues, because letsface it, as a kid, everyone is anxious to see what the other kid has brought.Barter systems and trading boxes has always been the highlight of recess andwill always remain the same for years to come.

The reason is simple, when we are little these small things formulate what we become in the future. The little boxes are coated with lively animated exteriors so that children canenjoy the sight of their favourite characters. The boxes change theirappearance as one grows older and the animated exteriors get converted to plainstainless steel or plastic. This gradual change is a depiction of mental growthand change in preference. These boxes have one thing in common over the years, and that is moms home cooked meals that cannot be substituted by any cafeteriapreparation.

The Tiffinbox is the local term that depicts a container that carries food. Itcan be the simple ones that a child takes to school or it can be the layeredone that holds a full fledges meal for an office goer. Irrespective of itsdestination, the box does one common thing and that is preservation offoodstuffs to keep freshness intact. The humidity in the atmosphere tends tosteal away the warmth and taste from the perishable elements but these airtightcontainers help preserve the moisture content of the food. If the edible foodpreparations are kept in the open for a long period of time then it tends towither away and rot. To prevent the occurrence of this, one must store food inairtight boxes. Over the years the Tiffin has been utilised for variousoccasions like picnics, social gatherings, school or even office. The Tiffinservices also utilise this product to provide fresh food to the client.

Lunch boxes can be used in many occasions as its modusoperandi is to preserve food. Hence, on trips or long drives, it is better tocarry home cooked meals instead of resorting to unhealthy snacking on the way.The eminence of this product has increased as the demand has increased. Lately, the diversity in designs makes it visually appealing that attracts a lot ofcustomers. The Tiffin box is often termed as lunchcarriers as they tend to carry food as well as preserve its taste and flavours.Tiffin in fact, is a slang derived from the obsolete British word Tiffin which meanstaking a sip but its meaning was modified to a light meal or lunch. Inreality, Tiffin does not necessarily mean a light meal; it can be any form offood in a box. The interesting fact is that this simple term has led to a wholeenterprise called the Tiffin service where people provide food to clients onregular basis, by following a well-knit system and policies.

Prosecutors begin NY State Sen. Hiram Monserrate felony assault case

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

At the opening of the criminal trial against New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate on Monday on charges of felony assault, prosecutors explained the motive behind his alleged attack on his girlfriend Karla Giraldo.

During opening arguments in the case, prosecutor Scott Kessler stated that when Monserrate discovered that his girlfriend had the business card of another man, he chose to strike out at her. According to prosecutor Kessler, Monserrate “struck her in a jealous rage”. Monserrate has entered a plea of not guilty to charges he sliced his girlfriend’s face with broken glass during a conflict at their apartment in December 2008.

“He struck her in a jealous rage.”

According to the account given in court by prosecutors, Giraldo asked her boyfriend Monserrate for a glass of water. Prosecutors said that in response, Monserrate stated “You want the water? You want the water? Here’s your water!” – and proceeded to cut her face using the glass. At the hospital, Giraldo reportedly told healthcare workers: “I can’t believe he did this to me. My face! My face!”.

“What happened was an accident.”

The defense team denied that the injury to the woman by Monserrate was intentional, instead claiming that the incident was “an accident”. Monserrate’s lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, said “What happened was an accident. There were only two people behind those closed doors and they both say it was an accident. You wonder why they even brought this case. It’s nothing more than rank speculation.” In Tacopina’s account of the incident, Monserrate was bringing his girlfriend a glass of water and tripped – and Giraldo woke up and the glass collided into her face. Tacopina characterized her injuries as “a freak accident”.

Kessler asserted that the incident was not an accident on the part of Monserrate. Referring to Monserrate’s emotions at the time of the incident, Kessler said “This case is about power and control. He didn’t just want that card thrown out, he wanted it destroyed.” According to prosecutors in the case, Giraldo originally stated to law enforcement officials that she had been attacked, and said to a nurse at the hospital where she was treated that her boyfriend had cut her face. The injuries to Giraldo’s face necessitated 20 stitches in the area surrounding her left eye. After Giraldo found out that Monserrate would be arrested in the matter, she recanted her statements.

Supreme Court Justice William Erlbaum will judge the case without a jury, as Monserrate waived his right for a trial before his peers. If convicted, Democrat Sen. Monserrate could serve prison time and lose his New York State Senate seat.

“Send a message that violence against women must be stopped and perpetrators must be brought to justice.”

The group National Organization for Women has requested that the judge rule Monserrate should be given “the maximum sentence allowable by law”. In an email to supporters, the organization said: “Call or write the Honorable William M. Erlbaum. Send a message that violence against women must be stopped and perpetrators must be brought to justice.” Included was a form letter with the message: “I implore you to do the right thing by punishing Senator Monserrate, giving him the maximum sentence allowable by law. By doing so, you will be sending a very important message and that is that violence against women is a serious crime.”

In response to complaints from Monserrate’s attorney that the group’s actions were inappropriate, the president of the organization in New York Marcia Pappas said “We’re imploring him to do the right thing. I’m sure the judge knows what he needs to do, so his position is not compromised.”

Monserrate is a former city councilman. He became a member of the New York State Senate weeks after the conflict with Giraldo, and was made chair of the committee overseeing consumer affairs. Along with Democrat Pedro Espada Jr., Monserrate started a shift in control of the Senate by aligning with the Republican Party.

Factors To Consider In Choosing A Computer

By David H. Urmann

Computers are essential for home and office use. There are preassembled units available for non technical users.

Computers have improved a lot in terms of performance and multi-tasking. There has been an increased demand of these electronic devices lately because computers are now important machines used in everyday work.

Computers come in different models and vary in specifications and design. Some individuals who do not have technical knowledge on computers purchase the preassembled ones while people who understand the basics better choose the parts and assemble it on their own. Assembling your own computer is best because you have more options to mix and match the parts based on your needs and budget.

Deciding on what computer to buy can be a challenging task. This article will provide you information on what factors to consider so you can decide what kind of computer will best work for you.

If you do not have the technical know-how, it is advisable to purchase preassembled units. You can ask assistance from to see what kind of setup will work best in your work lifestyle and budget. Purchase the computer from an authorized dealer so that your unit will have a warranty.

Whether you are buying preassembled PC or want to assemble your own, it is important to know the components and its functions so you can have a basis of your decision.

The most important part of the computer is the CPU. It is considered the brain of the computer. It is responsible for the overall speed whenever it is processing any task.

There are two manufacturers who have dominated the market in producing processors. They are the AMD and Intel. Intel’s most popular processors include the Pentium based and Celeron. Meanwhile, the AMD’s flagship is the Athlon and Sempron based processors. AMD processors are generally cheaper than Intel’s.

The motherboard is the device where all the parts and devices are attached. Some motherboard comes with onboard components which include video card, sound card, LAN card and modem. It is also important to consider what devices you are going to attach to the ports of the motherboard, and buy accordingly.

The RAM (random access memory) is the part responsible for the overall performance of the computer. The bigger the RAM, the faster the computer can process data. If you have enough budget, purchase the maximum RAM supported by your motherboard.

The video card is another important component. The quality of the image is due to the capacity of the video card. If you are into graphics designing and gaming, it is best to choose the highest memory of video card 3D capable. The high quality video card is also advisable to those who are fond of watching movies in their computer.

The hard drive is the storage device where all programs and games are installed and all other files are stored. If you love to collect a lot of videos and graphics, it is best to choose the highest capacity of storage. It is measured in terms of gigabytes.

The sound card is the part which processes audio signals going to the speaker. If you are going to connect your computer to a 5.1 speaker, then you should choose the best sound card capable of producing a surround sound. This is important when playing a lot of music, watching videos or playing video games often.

The power supply is responsible in powering your computer. It should be able to supply the necessary power for all the components of the computer. Never use cheap types because it is prone to seriously damage any of the components of the computer if it malfunctions.

Also consider the bundled software which includes the operating system, productivity software, anti virus and many other useful applications. If you are going to use other software you need for your work, make sure that the computer is capable of running it without any problem. Consider the compatibility of your software versus the specifications of your computer unit.

Also, list down other devices you may want to include to complete your computer setup.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.
