StarOffice 8 launched

Tuesday, September 27, 2005

Sun Microsystems has released StarOffice 8 today. StarOffice 8 is a commercial office suite that includes word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database applications.

According to Sun, StarOffice 8 “provides excellent compatibility with Microsoft Office”. This new version improves Word, Excel and PowerPoint import and export filters, improving support for password-protected Word and Excel files and presentations with complex animations, autoshapes and slide transitions. StarOffice 8 also includes a Microsoft Office macro converter allowing many Microsoft Office macros to work in StarOffice.

StarOffice 8 is also the first commercial office suite to support the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument). OpenDocument is an XML based file format created by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards. Massachusetts has recently announced the plan to switch to OpenDocument format. Microsoft has said it will not support the OpenDocument format.

StarOffice 8 is based on the open source OpenOffice.org project. OpenOffice.org was founded July 2000, by Sun with the release of StarOffice code under two open source licenses.

StarOffice 8 is available as a download from Sun’s Web site for $69.95, or packaged product can be ordered for $99.95. Enterprise customers can purchase StarOffice 8 for $35 (£20) per user. OpenOffice.org is available for free from openoffice.org.

Why Opt For Professional Curtain Cleaning?

Of all the household upholstery and fabrics you may have, the most difficult to keep in good shape are curtains and rugs. You cant pop your drapes and rug in the washing machine every time they look dingy and hope theyll come out looking fine. They need special care. For a start you have to maintain them on a regular basis to keep them as clean as possible without having to wash them. Vacuuming your curtains every week using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner, would keep them dust free. Some curtains can be washed at home, especially if they are made of synthetic fabrics or faux silk etc. Check the washing instructions for your drapes. Most might indicate that they need dry cleaning, in case they can be home washed, you still might have to perform a home washing test on a small corner of the fabric before you put your draperies into the machine or bathtub. If the colour should begin to bleed, dont risk it by doing the curtain cleaning at home. Sometimes the lining of your draperies might not be colour-fast. If you tried washing them at home your curtains would lose their sheen and get ruined. Shades can be cleaned at home by vacuuming with the brush attachment. Using a furniture cleaning spray, spray the area and wipe clean finger marks and other mild stains. Make a mild soapy solution with liquid detergent and apply it with a sponge to the rolled out shade. Rinse it out with a clean sponge soaked in fresh water. Allow the shades to dry before rolling them up.Curtain cleaning is a big issue for most home owners as washing and cleaning them at home on your own is not an easy task. Dry cleaning is often the only option. Draperies are very expensive and need special attention. The fabric may shrink if handled by inexpert cleaners. If your curtains and drapes are made of natural fabrics like silk, cottons and linen, they will be spoilt if they are handled by unskilled persons.Velvet and other heavier fabrics are very difficult to handle, leave alone clean. When you give your velvet drapes for cleaning, your dry cleaner should have large enough machines to handle the bulky fabric. Curtains and draperies add glamour and elegance to a room. They are functional in keeping out sunlight and preserving privacy. For a beautiful home and well maintained look you should pay attention to curtain cleaning. London home owners can find professional dry cleaners in the city with experience in residential and commercial curtain cleaning.

As the Eurovision entrants return home, the home crowds weigh in

Monday, May 18, 2009

Most of the Eurovision entrants have returned home from their sojourn in Moscow, Russia, and the newspapers across Europe have varied opinions. Most national newspapers congratulated their entrants on a job well done, while others trash-talked other entrants, and still others called for their countries to pull out of the Contest.

Here are some interviews, articles and opinions that made it to the front pages of newspapers and to their sanctioned blogs.

Norway’s mass media was filled with stories revolving around the winner, Alexander Rybak, but a secondary story that received press coverage was outcry against NRK‘s Eurovision commentator, Synnøve Svabø, who was criticized for talking incessantly during the event, making leering comments regarding the contents inside the male entrants’ tight pants, and making a joke about stuffing sweatsocks in her own bra. When asked for a statement by Aftenposten, Svabø said, “I guess people think I should have put the socks in my throat.” NRK did not comment on Svabø’s commentating or whether she will be returning next year.

Sweden’s newspaper Aftonbladet wrote that the “Swede of the evening” was not Sweden’s entrant Malena Ernman, but Malmö-raised Arash Labaf, one of the two singers placing third for Azerbaijan. Markus Larsson wrote, “21st place? Well, this is our second-worst result ever…Malena Ernman fell so far and deep that she almost ended up in Finland. That is to say, almost last.” When asked if she was disappointed, Ernman responded, “No, but I am sorry if the Swedes are disappointed.” She went on to quip, “Europe is simply not ready for my high notes.”

Finland, despite placing last, wrote upbeat stories; Helsingin Sanomat published an interview with Waldo and Karoliina from the Finnish act, Waldo’s People, who announced how happy they were to have participated and will be going right back to work with performances and recordings as soon as they return to Finland.

Most British newspapers in past years published lengthy screeds regarding their bad luck in the Contest and whether they should send an entrant at all. This year all that talk subsided, and newspapers published articles congratulating Jade Ewen on her fifth place ranking. Sir Terry Wogan, former Eurovision commentator for the BBC, said to the Daily Express about this year’s voting overhaul, “I think my protest about the voting was totally vindicated by the changes that were made to the scoring this year. It made a real difference. It was the change that Eurovision needed.” One of the headlines in Monday’s Daily Mail reads: “She did us proud.” Andrew Lloyd Webber, who worked with Ewen, said, “Jade performed brilliantly. After years of disappointing results, the UK can finally hold its head high.”

Spain’s newspaper El Mundo published an article entitled “Soraya’s fiasco,” outlining Soraya Arnelas‘s failure to receive points from 37 of the 41 other voting nations, with the writer remarking, “After a whole year trying to forget [Rodolfo Chikilicuatre, Spain’s “joke entrant” from 2008], Soraya jumped on-stage with strength…Spain’s experiment ended with longing [for] Rodolfo Chikilicuatre.” When asked about her performance and the result, Arnelas said, “I’ll hang on to the experiences I had, the great friends that I made and I’m happy because now I’m known in Europe.”

French newspapers and blogs were muted compared to other countries, but the overall feeling was still very supportive of Patricia Kaas, who placed eighth. In an interview with Le Figaro, Kaas said, “Eighth place, that’s not so bad. It was a great moment for France, we held our head high.” France Soir noted, “[Kaas’s] emotion does not seem to have found a place with competitors that have relied on heavy artillery choreography worthy of those like Shakira, and glamorous outfits, to ensure a place on the podium.”

German newspapers published lengthy stories analyzing why Germany was in the bottom quartile for the third straight year. Die Welt wrote, “The Germans have become accustomed to it: winning the Eurovision Song Contest just does not work [for us]. [Compared] to the total failure of last place with No Angels last year, [this] result is almost a sensational success.” Bild commented, “For years we have had little success. Germany’s placement, despite all efforts, will not be better. Why are we still participating in the Eurovision Song Contest?”

Ireland, who failed to make it to the final, led the cry to pull out of Eurovision. In the Irish Independent, Ian O’Doherty wrote, “Ireland managed something quite rare and rather gratifying last week — we actually managed to produce a Eurovision song that didn’t make you want to rip off your own eyelids so you could stuff them in your ears to stop the horrible sounds…[Sinéad] Mulvey’s elimination is proof of one thing: we need to pull out of this pile of rubbish as soon as possible.”

The Netherlands, another nation that did not make it past the semi-final round, has been very apathetic toward the Contest in recent years, and this year was no different. De Telegraaf conducted an opinion poll of Dutch television viewers, and 90% of them believed the Netherlands should not enter the Contest anymore. Despite the stated apathy, 2.5 million Dutch viewers watched De Toppers compete in the second semi-final, an improvement of 800,000 from last year’s semi-final, where Dutch entrant Hind also failed to advance. De Toppers singer Gordon, in an interview with De Telegraaf, said that the Netherlands should continue to compete: “One time, we will succeed.”

Australia: Magnitude 5.9 earthquake detected in north-east Victoria

Saturday, September 25, 2021

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 was detected on Wednesday in the Australian town of Mansfield, which is located in the north-east of Victoria. Geoscience Australia stated the earthquake was recorded in Mansfield at 9:15am local time with a 10 kilometers (6 mi) depth. An estimated 15 minutes after the initial event, an aftershock of 4.0 magnitude occurred near Mansfield. The agency declared the earthquake is one of the largest to occur since colonisation in east Australia.

The earthquake was felt across the country, with over 15,000 recording on the Geoscience Australia website they had felt it. ABC News reported the earthquake was felt in the states of Victoria, New South Wales (NSW), South Australia, and Tasmania, as well as the nation’s capital of Canberra. In the inner suburbs of Melbourne, apartment buildings were evacuated, with reports of building and road damage shared on social media. Local authorities confirmed there was no risk of tsunamis.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales “dispatched crews across NSW from Alexandria, Manly and Hornsby in Sydney to as far as Dubbo in Western NSW following reports of tremors felt across the state” as a result of the earthquake, though no major structural damage was reported in New South Wales.

Karen McGregor, an employee of FoodWorks in Mansfield, reported “the windows started shaking, the walls, and everything on the desk, it was really quite scary. We ran downstairs to the shop, it was really, really scary down there. The windows were buckling. I was very scared. I just thought, oh my God, is this place going to fall down?” McGregor added she had not heard of any injuries in the town.

From Washington, D.C., Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said “it can be a very, very disturbing event for an earthquake of this nature. They are very rare events in Australia and, as a result, I am sure people will have been quite distressed and disturbed by that.” Morrison confirmed he was in contact with Victorian state Premier Daniel Andrews, and the Australian federal government was prepared to provide support to Victorians where needed, including the possibility of deploying the Australian Defence Force if necessary.

While Geoscience Australia initially reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0, the head of the Seismology Research Centre Adam Pascale has said “we think it’s a mag-5.8 potentially at this point in Gippsland”, adding the earthquake “shook here in the northern suburbs of Melbourne for about 15-20 seconds so it’s quite a significant earthquake”. Geoscience Australia has since revised the magnitude to 5.9.

Further aftershocks remain a possibility, with Pascale saying “there’s usually a primary and a secondary wave”, and geoscientist Mark Quigley telling The Age “for something of that size, we’re talking about a fault that would be on the order of maybe 5 kilometres long and three kilometres wide. For an earthquake of that magnitude, we would expect to get hundreds of small aftershocks. We could get aftershocks in the range of 4.5 magnitude.”

Chicago Metra considers selling naming rights for train lines, stations

Sunday, February 14, 2010

Chicago’s Metra is currently considering the possibility of selling the naming rights to its train stations, rail lines, and even bridges to generate more revenue.

The regional rail system for Chicago and its surrounding suburbs has been experiencing revenue shortfalls, along with other public transportation agencies such as the Chicago Transit Authority and Pace. They all rely on sales taxes and fares to fund their services, but the recent recession has reduced sales tax revenues, and unemployment has caused ridership to fall. Compared to 86.8 million trips in 2008, Metra reported that only 82.3 million trips were provided in 2009. As spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet said, “We’re looking at any opportunity to increase non-fare revenue.”

A law approved by former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich in 2008 granted free rides to all seniors regardless of income, adding to the decreasing fare revenues as well. State lawmakers are trying to restrict the free rides to low-income seniors; Metra has not yet commented on the issue, however.

New designs put on the agency’s website last September has attracted more traffic, and Metra is considering selling advertising space online. In addition, advertising space could be sold on the outside of train cars as well. As for the naming rights to stations and routes, Metra plans to hire a consultant that would figure out the details of such a proposal. Spokesperson Meg Reihle did not know how much money Metra could gain from the sale or which organizations would be interested in buying.

According to Ms. Reihle, public transit agencies in other cities have sold naming rights as well, such as the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority in Cleveland and Long Island Rail Road in Long Island. TECO Energy sponsors a rail line in Tampa’s Hillsborough Area Regional Transit for US$1 million over ten years.

Throughout its 26-year history, Metra has named several of its locomotives and renamed two stations: Ogilvie Transportation Center, which was previously named North Western Station, and Millennium Terminal, which was previously called Randolph Street. No transactions were made in renaming those two stations, however. There is also a Station named after the candy maker Mars, but that station was named before Metra took it over, and the company doesn’t pay Metra for any naming rights.

I think the business community recognizes that transit is positive for their advertising benefit

Execuive Director Phil Pagano sees the proposal as a way for businesses to advertise themselves. “I think the business community recognizes that transit is positive for their advertising benefit,” said Mr. Pagano at a board meeting. In addition to businesses, hospitals located near the train stations could purchase naming rights as well. However, Mr. Pagano has also stated that “the agency would be selective about the type of businesses it partners with.”

Metra has said that it will be sensitive to the wishes of the communities near the stops, and town names will not be removed from station names. Rather, both the municipality and the sponsoring organization would share the naming rights, such as in renaming Naperville Station to “Naperville Boeing Station”. “I’m not sure whether [the old name] is first or second, but definitely it’s going to have to be there,” said Mr. Pagano.

Oral Roberts University president accused of illegal political donations and financial misappropriation

Friday, October 5, 2007

Richard Roberts, the President of Oral Roberts University, and his wife, Lindsay Roberts, are accused of illegal political contributions, financial wrong-doing, and wrongful firings in a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The lawsuit was filed by three former professors who claim “they were wrongfully dismissed after reporting the school’s involvement in a local political race.” According to KTEN television news, “Roberts’ statement says personal expenses are charged to him and he personally pays them on a monthly basis.” On October 3, Roberts “told students and faculty during his weekly chapel Wednesday that the lawsuit is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”

Richard has been president of ORU since his father, Oral Roberts university founder and former faith healer, “semi-retired” in 1993.

Healthcare Compliance Is Hipaa Compliance

Perhaps the Risk Manager had a Compliance hat she wore when the occasion demanded. While there were compliance responsibilities with regard to medical records, they were mostly to do with ensuring that the all forms were completed (such as Operative Reports, or Discharge Summaries). In the late 1990’s, the trend toward digitization of electronic health records raised new health care compliance concerns: privacy and security. HIPAA, an act instituted in ’96, was not originally meant to deal with healthcare compliance directly. The focus was portability. The intent was to enable employees to move between jobs without losing their health insurance due to denials of enrollment by the new employer’s insurer due to preexisting conditions (in fact the legislation in essence, forbade denial of enrollment on the ground of preexisting condition, when an employee was hired by a subscribing company within a certain period of time). Yet, HIPAA lawyers (yes, the term was coined during this time) realized that health insurance companies had to perform certain actuarial calculations in order to assess risk and set premiums, and, to that end, they had to review the claims experience. The only practical way to do that was to review the codes used for those claims. The problem is that these codes are not standardized. Every state has their own set of codes. This incited aides to the Congress and Dept. of social services to create a single, unified set of claims codes. Yet, as with most things legislative, this begat another concern: with all this very sensitive information being transmitted on a regular basis, there was the potential for abuse if the patient data were to end up in the hands of those unauthorized to view it, and who would perhaps use it for non-benign purposes. As a result, DHHS allowed for comments about medical privacy issues. They received nearly 40,000 comments about health information that had been mishandled with regard to its privacy. As a result of this massive inquiry, HIPAA privacy rules were established dealing with criteria and disclosure of medical information. Soon after, there were a number of rules instituted that dealt with the manufacturing of, the storage of, and the ultimate disclosure of protected health information. These six-hundred pages were the beginning of what has come to be known as HIPAA law.Since then those who know HIPAA law has become almost a cottage industry within the area of healthcare law. As Healthcare law has become more robust, and areas like healthcare compliance have been added, lawyers have had to learn more and more about the industry especially with regard to how changes affect security and privacy. Yet, as more and more health information was created, stored and transferred electronically, the hospitals and medical practices established many offices like the office for a position of Chief Information Security. This trend was given a significant boost in 2004, when President George W. Bush issued an Executive Order setting in motion a national transition to an interoperable electronic health record system by 2004. After Bush’s executive order was issued, Congress established funding to help with the transition. Hillary Clinton sponsored one of the first bills allotting funding. As a result of thin margins and slow reimbursement, a number regional hospitals were slow to adopt the new measures. This hurt national coordination efforts. Medicare stopped taking paper claims submissions, but there was still significant resistance among care givers to give up the pen and paper. In February, 2009 legislation was passed which would almost require every Risk Manager and Compliance Officer to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of HIPAA law, as it pertained to electronic health records. As part of the “Stimulus Package” Congress passed another law known by its acronym HITECH. In a reprise of the concerns which led to the implementation of the HIPAA Privacy and Security standards, HITECH did three things that will change the daily activities of Risk Managers, hospital counsel, Privacy Officers and IT and Security Officers. It provided for Thirty Billion Dollars in incentive payments to be used to accelerate the transition to an interoperative health record system. The law, enacted on Jan. 13,2010, establishes criteria for access to those funds, allowing only those who can exchange data in an accurate and secure manner. In addition to all that, the third way in which it affects the healthcare industry is that it requires that all information is accessible in a way that is consistent and buttressing old HIPAA privacy and security standards. Such a mandate is made even harder, however, by the fact that HIPAA rules were expanded and strengthened as a result of the act.As hospital staff are made aware of these new regulations, despite being in the middle of a recession, there is no doubt that lawyers will we be called upon by hospitals. Healthcare compliance will truly become HIPAA compliance.

Police called to investigate after tenant draws swastikas in landlord’s house

Thursday, September 6, 2007

82-year-old Jewish Bowmanville, Ontario woman Ms. Marion Schwarz’s house has been found vandalized with graffiti showing neo-Nazism expressions, as well as swastikas. Broken windows and walls were found ripped open.

The terms “Kike”, “Fuck Jews,” and “White Power” were written in white around the house, as well as a large green swastika.

The woman’s husband Mr. Allan Schwarz, was returning home to their house on King Street East, the town’s center, to bring home a present for their 40th wedding anniversary when he found the house not the way he left it.

Bought to start an antique store, the Schwarz’s started a cattle business instead and later rented it out. Ten years ago their tenant started to rent the house, just five months ago he stopped paying rent saying he was on welfare. Ms. Schwarz offered to lower his rent. He vandalized and fled, with his son and daughter, from the house on Tuesday morning, the day he was to be evicted. She was accompanied by her son Alan, two police officers, and a locksmith.

“I don’t know what happened to him … Up until the last while, I never had a day’s trouble with him. He was friendly,” Ms. Schwarz said.

Durham Regional Police are now investigating what they refer to as an “incident”, and what lobby group B’nai Brith Canada has argued constitutes a “hate crime”.

“A swastika on its own, as per the Criminal Code of Canada, is not a hate crime,” said Sgt. Paul McCurbin. “It doesn’t have the proper components to be considered a hate crime. For example, if I said that I was going to kill a race of people or we should kill a race of people, that would be considered a hate crime.”

A local neighbor, who asked not to be named, swept glass from the broken windows off the sidewalk, worried that dogs could cut their feet. She said the tenants were private people.

A Prisoner of War (POW) camp was located in Bowmanville during World War II (WWII). [1] [2] Named Camp 30 it held captive German army officers from the Afrika Korps, fliers from the Luftwaffe and naval officers from the Kriegsmarine. Many of them were transferred from England. Among them was famous top U-boat ace of World War II Otto Kretschmer. He was involved in the Battle of Bowmanville.

The Bowmanville boys’ school was the building holding the prisoners. The facility had been designed to house 300 boys. Surrounding the existing school buildings was a barbed wire fence. It was not the typical POW camp, having good food and prisoners being well treated. It had gardens and even a swimming pool was built. Movies were shown each week, music concerts were held, and stage plays were produced.

Mr. Schwarz fled from Germany to Canada in 1938. Marion, a Toronto native, and her husband moved to Bowmanville to start a new life.

“In 1938, we found safe haven in Bowmanville,” said her son Alan. “It was wonderful place to settle and my parents have been here basically for 70 years. They never anticipated ever facing the same kind of symbolism they had to leave Germany for.”

The investigation still continues. The tenant’s name has not been released.

“We couldn’t foresee anything like this because human beings don’t do things like this.”
