New Zealand prisoners do nothing says National party

Sunday, November 5, 2006

Figures released by Simon Power, law and order spokesman for the National party, show that the New Zealand Labour led government lets 81% of all prisoners not do any work while in prison. Newspaper, Sunday News says that some Christchurch prisoners have been given a barbecue for good behavior.

Simon Power’s figures show that of the 7,612 prisoners only 19% (1,470) of them took part in Corrections Inmate Employment during 2006. But in 2005 it was at 23% and in 2004 it was at 26%. He says that the prisons with the least amount of inmates working are: Rolleston with 8.6%, Mount Eden with 8.7%, Rimutaka with 11%, Christchurch Women’s with 13.5% and Dunedin with 13.8%. Mr Power said: “These figures are an appalling indictment on this Government’s approach to prisoner rehabilitation and preparing them for release.”

“In May, Corrections Minister Damien O’Connor announced a strategy that he said would help in ‘significantly increasing the number of prisoners in work and training. But a week later this was shown to be nothing more than window dressing when the Budget increased funding for prisoner employment by a measly $336,000 – up 1%.”

“They have cut funding [on the Corrections Department] by 27% since 2001/02, from $46.5 million to $34 million.”

Mr Power blames the low work rate on the big prison construction budget of $490 million. “There would have been more than a miserable $336,000 extra to spend on effective rehabilitation and work schemes,” he said.

“[Mr O’Conner] seems happier to spend $11 million on landscaping four new prisons and allow prisoners to sit around playing Playstations and Xboxes on their flat-screen TVs than he is about helping them get better prepared for when they are released.”

“Prisoners should be doing meaningful work, training or study while they are in prisons, and I imagine the public would agree,” Mr Power added.

Mr Power, commenting on the barbecue, said: “These people are in prison because they were found to be in serious breach of the law. The victims of their crimes will be grossly offended by the idea that they are being rewarded for anything. This is the just the latest in a long line of incredibly bad decisions made by the Corrections Department over the past year and taxpayers have had enough.”

Bevan Hanlon, president for the Corrections Officers Association, said: “The Mobsters getting a BBQ was a “joke”. (Christchurch Prison) staff are reporting the smell of dope every day. Mobsters are threatening staff on a daily basis and there appears to be high cellphone use (mobile phones are banned in jail). So what happens? They are given a BBQ.”

Australia: Victoria lockdown extended by a week with 85 active cases recorded

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

Yesterday, with 85 active cases of COVID-19 in the Australian state of Victoria, Premier Daniel Andrews has extended the state’s current lockdown by a week until July 27 at 11:59 p.m. (0159 UTC).

Since a five-day lockdown was first announced last Thursday, cases have been recorded in areas across Victoria, including Phillip Island, Mildura and Barwon Heads. Notably, Mildura’s COVID-19 case, which was recorded on Sunday, is their first in 15 months. Thirteen new cases of coronavirus were recorded in Victoria yesterday.

Red zone travel permits, required for residents of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory for entry into Victoria, are temporarily paused. Andrews said that while this decision would “cause a real challenge for many people”, he justified this decision by saying that “things are too unstable—too uncertain and frankly out of control from a virus point of view in Sydney”.

State health minister Martin Foley stated, “We’ve had thousands of Victorians return from New South Wales in recent weeks, but with the situation escalating, the recent incursions and the increased infectiousness of the Delta variant, we must act to protect Victoria and temporarily pause Red Zone Permits.”

Restrictions remain the same from the initial Thursday announcement. Under the regulations, there are only five reasons to leave home: for food and supplies; exercise; care or caregiving; work or education, if not possible from home; and to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In exercising, people cannot go more than 5 kilometers (3 mi) away from their home, and for no more than two hours. The vaccination should be administered at the nearest possible location. Face masks remain mandatory both outdoors and indoors, except at home.

A press release from the premier’s office said the COVID-19 Delta variant is moving “faster than anything Victoria’s public health experts have seen before”, adding as a result “we need to limit movement for a longer period of time”. The press release also noted over 15 thousand close contacts of cases in quarantine, over 250 exposure sites across the state, and the COVID-19 daily case numbers remaining in double digits.

When Bad Things Happen To Good Homeowners

By Aaron Hoos

Who likes to talk about worst-case scenarios? No one!

Insurance and warranties can be unpleasant to talk about because they are difficult to understand and no one likes to talk about the worst-case scenario. But the reality is that life gets in the way of our best laid plans and the worst-case scenario becomes a reality more often than we wish!

Insurance helps to address problems that arise and so does a home warranty. In both cases they are meant to return you to the situation you were in before the incident that caused the damage or malfunction. Sure, there are more interesting and more enjoyable things to talk about. But preparing intelligently for the challenges and obstacles that life throws at us will allow us to go through our day with peace of mind, and it will allow us to simply sleep better at night.

So how do we prepare for worst-case scenarios in our home? With house insurance and a home warranty.

Insurance and Home Warranties: Used together, they are an effective way to manage your homes worst case scenarios. Heres how they functions as the perfect partners:

If your freezer broke down and ruins all of the food inside, your insurance can replace the damaged food while the home warranty will repair or replace the freezer itself.

If your washing machine breaks down and floods your home, your insurance would pay for the damages caused by the flooding while your home warranty would ensure that your washing machine was repaired or replaced so that it functions again.

If your home was broken into, and they stole your air conditioner, your insurance would replace it. However, if your air conditioner just stopped working one day, your home warranty would replace or repair it and cool you off again!

Buying insurance and a home warranty is a smart way to cover all your bases and ensure that your home is totally protected from the worst that could happen: no matter what!

Spending a few minutes now to think about worst case scenarios will save you a world of headache in the future when those scenarios become reality. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Will Herbal Medicines Increase Sperm Count After Vasectomy Reversal? Find Out!

By Seomul Evans

One of the dilemmas of men who have had vasectomy reversal is getting their partners pregnant. This is a major concern for couples who want to conceive soon after reversing vasectomy. Male infertility is often reflected in sperm count. To assess sperm viability, a semen analysis is requested. Abnormalities in the parameters consequently mean lesser chance of conceiving a child, or in severe cases-impotence. Knowledge of this can be very frustrating to the couple. Even so, there are several ways to increase sperm count especially after vasectomy reversal. A much cheaper and safer remedy to stabilize the parameters is the use of herbal medicines.

Ginseng (Panax Ginseng)

Originally, elders from China used ginseng to improve their physical and mental vitality. Ginseng is helpful to increase testosterone and sperm count in men. However, according to studies, overdose of ginseng may result to hypertension, euphoria, insomnia, among others. After a vasectomy reversal, ask your vasectomy reversal doctor for proper prescription of ginseng.

Maca(Lepidium Meyenii)

This herbal medicine normalizes steroid hormones such as testosterone, progesterone and estrogen. It is said that maca acts on men to enhance libido, or the desire for sexual drive. Studies concluded that maca has no adverse pharmacologic effects in the body. Maca intake after vasectomy reversal can increase your chance of pregnancy.

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens)

Worries of lowered sperm count after reversing vasectomy can be eased by intake of saw palmetto. This herbal medicine is said to increase overall male reproductive health.

Tribulus (Tribulus Terrestris)

Tribulus appears to increase libido and erectile function in men. Three studies in Bulgaria concluded that Tribulus increases sex hormones and testosterone levels. It also increases sperm concentration, sperm motility and viability. For a greater chance of fertility, post-vasectomy reversal patients may take Tribulus, as per noted by your vasectomy reversal doctor or your infertility specialist.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)

This Chinese herbal medicine is known to stimulate sperm motility. Studies show that Astragalus has no side effects known to human.

Sarsaparilla

This herbal product is found in plants that have grown in swampy forest. This has been used for centuries to aid sexual impotence both in men and women.

Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium sagittatum)

It is said that this herb improves erectile dysfunction in men and increases sperm count.

In general, herbal medicines have no remarkable side effects. However, proper consultation with your vasectomy reversal doctor is advised. If pregnancy is not attained yet after a long interval from reversing vasectomy, your doctor may refer you to an infertility specialist. Aside from herbal medicines, there are still several ways to increase fertility post-vasectomy reversal. Intake of healthy foods and lifestyle change will certainly boost the chance to father a child again.

Here are some ways to increase sperm viability after a vasectomy reversal:

— Get proper rest.

— Sleep 6 to 8 hours continuously.

— Stop smoking and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke

— Exercise regularly but avoid lifting of heavy objects

— Avoid strenuous activities

— Stop alcohol intake

— Avoid wearing of tight underwear and tight jeans

— Meditate regularly to distress

— Rest between long hours of work

— Avoid exposure to environmental toxins

Taking It Right

Although herbal medicine is believed to be safe for consumption and treatment, it is still best to consult you vasectomy reversal doctor or any health care professional prior to intake. Medical experts can prescribe you with the right dosage and frequency of intake.

Immediate life insurance website launched, first in world

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

The first website in the world allowing consumers to buy life insurance online instantly has been launched today, targeting specifically New Zealanders.

The website, run by life insurance company Pinnacle Life, allows New Zealanders in many countries in the world to buy life insurance online without the need for a medical examination. Once the application has been approved, which is done immediately, the consumer can receive a $500,000 life insurance policy via an automatic e-mail. However, if certain conditions have been highlighted, then person to person contact is required to finalise the process.

Ed Saul, senior partner and architect of the new website, says, “We’re giving consumers a quicker and easier way to buy life insurance. Instead of submitting an application form and waiting days for a policy to be approved and issued, we do it online and we do it immediately.”

“The revolutionary website gives consumers complete control over the buying process whilst eliminating the previously obligatory involvement of people and paper. This is a global test case eagerly watched by the insurance industry around the world,” Mr Saul said.

When applying online, a few typical questions are asked on personal information and if the applicant has had any previous illnesses or diseases.

The countries where New Zealand citizens are allowed to apply are UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA.
