The Advancement Of The Self Storage Unit

Submitted by: Jason Kay

Self storage units have been around since the 1970’s and have undergone a lot of changes since then. Today, a growing number of people and businesses are taking advantage of the convenience that self storage units provide. However, most people have no idea where self storage units actually came from and how they have evolved over time. Some units are still very similar to the original units whereas some have advanced a great deal in order to accommodate the changing needs of todays storage users. Here is a quick look at how self storage has changed over the last few decades.

Originally, self storage units had very few rules and were normally built off of the everyday path with no additional safety aside from the locks on the doors. Initially, the rules were fairly simple and few in number. They included: no one can sleep or live in their storage unit, they could not resale or sub-lease a storage unit, and could not store hazardous materials. That was about it.

Over time, the self storage industry has grown extremely rapidly and the services provided has expanded a great deal. They now range widely in sizes and accommodations Traditionally, self storage units had a very limited selection in regards to size whereas today, storage units can be as small as walk-in closet or large enough to store everything from a two-bedroom apartment.

Some of the most noted changes are in the features that a self storage unit has as well as the safety precautions that are taken. Some of the newer features include: climate controlled environments and cold storage. Climate control has proven especially useful as people are starting to store more fragile items such as finished wood and electronics. Climate controlled storage units are insulated and well constructed which helps them to prevent a variety of damage such as water damage and mold/spore damage.

Security has changed in a number of ways as well. Recent technology that is being used include: keypad access, 24-hour onsite security, a variety of fencing, and video surveillance. Before these types of security measures were used, self storage units were often left out in the open with the padlock being the primary means of securing the property inside. They also did not have fencing or any on-site or video security either.

As you can see, self storage units have already advanced quite a bit since the 1970’s. The main advancements can be seen in the increased size, features, and security that are now provided as a standard service. It is expected that self storage will continue to advance as quality alternatives continue to join the marketplace, most notably PODS-style systems. To compete with the convenience of mobile self storage, traditional self storage units are primarily relying on advances that are being made to features, such as climate control, and guaranteed security.

Now that you have a better understanding of how self storage units have advanced over the past several decades, it should be easier to identify which services are more up-to-date than the rest. This will not only help you make a quality choice, but also help you identify what features are most meaningful to fit your needs.

Saskatchewan places moratorium on boar farming, says escaped boars should be killed

Saturday, March 14, 2009

At the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) conference, a resolution was passed that encourages the Government of Saskatchewan, Canada to place a moratorium on specialty livestock farms raising wild boar. All wild boars that have escaped to roam wild should be killed, according to the resolution.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud endorses a ban on wild boar farming. The wild boar population is expanding exponentially. There are over 2,000 feral Sus scrofa swine roaming the prairies. Two litters of approximately 12 piglets are sired by each wild boar sow every year. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) likewise passed a similar resolution at their 79th annual convention to urge the Saskatchewan Government to declare the wild boar as a nuisance species which can be killed on sight.

3% of farmed “wild” boars escape. Cells of wild boars are ravenous creatures killing and eating everything in their path. Horses, cows, and other livestock run from wild boars, breaking through fences in the process.

Ostriches, emus, llamas, alpacas, reindeer, wild boar, and fallow deer were amongst the animals introduced to farms in Saskatchewan during the agricultural diversification program in the late 1970s. Production of wild boars was promoted throughout the 1980s.

According to the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food 2001 statistics, there were 150 wild boar producers raising approximately 15,000 and 20,000 head. Of these there were about 2,700 sows. On the 2006 Census of Agriculture, 401 farms reported 4,926 boars.

The boar’s red meat is an export commodity to Europe and Asia. The live breeding stock are also sold to trophy hunt ranches. Full blooded wild boar and hybrid crosses are raised.

Pakistan: Suspected US drone strikes kill seven rebels

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Security officials in Pakistan have stated that “[a]t least seven militants” have been killed by suspected US drone strikes. According to reports, US aircraft fired four missiles in North Waziristan, which killed seven or eight rebels and destroyed two cars parked outside a building.

An intelligence official informed AFP that at least seven militants were killed in the incident while three others were wounded. Two other officials from Miranshah confirmed the reports. The identities of those killed have not been confirmed. Officials said the area was a stronghold of a rebel group headed by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, which regularly attacks NATO officials in the country.

The first of the two attacks occurred when two missiles fired at a pair of cars beside a camp located near Mir Ali, North Waziristan, killed six people. The missiles destroyed a nearby compound as well as the vehicles according to officials. Officials added that two suspected rebels were killed by another drone which was fired near the bank of a river close to the camp. These were the ninth and tenth drone strikes carried out in the month of October. September had seen twenty one such strikes, which was the highest number of monthly airstrikes in Pakistan.

Fat Loss Plans May Change Your Life

Most doctors may tell you that weight loss supplements are not required and that only a good calorie controlled diet along with daily exercise is the only thing one requires to lose weight. Contrar to what many skeptics and misinformed persons may report or say, even if your body sheds water during the first few days of a calorie controlled carbohydrate diet plan like the South Beach Diet or Atkins, the body’s water balance soon returns to normal and the weight loss that follows is the loss of fat pounds.

Work in consultation with your natural health care giver if you decide to try an over the counter weight loss pill to help you lose weight. If you insist on knowing your progress by weight loss and want to use a scale, try to weigh yourself at the same time everyday. Whatever weight loss exercise you choose, try to get your heart rate up to about 70 percent of your safe maximum.

Any weight loss or diet plan, together with low-carb plans like the induction phase of the Atkins Diet may result in water loss during the first week or two. If you’re on a weight loss program you’re under constant attack – attack from the food bandits all around you. It seems everyone is looking for that enchanting bullet like that rapid weight loss secret that may instantly shed excess weight and turn you into a supermodel. Not likely

The fact is, there are healthy, effective and simple techniques you can use to achieve weight loss – and keep it off over the long term. A weight loss coach may help you each and every step of the way giving you support, inspiration, and may show you the secrets that all slim people know, so that you can lose weight in a healthy way and allow you to maintain your weight and get back to your Body Perfect Fitness and Health for life.

Some types of weight loss surgeries reduce the body’s ability to absorb important vitamins and minerals. Many people start a weight loss program with their basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the amount of energy (calories) your body uses in a resting state, For many people, the improvement in their overall health, following weight loss surgery, is just as important as the weight loss itself.

Ok, these are a few of the things I used in the past to get through a weight loss plateau. If you have been frustrated with past weight loss attempts, give the 3 W’s of weight loss a try. Discuss the options with your doctor and take his advice in planning your exercise and weight loss program.

So you sweat and strain with your chosen weight loss program, perhaps ecstatically so at the start. So although I don’t think you can use fasting as a diet or weight loss program, I do feel that it can be a great start to a proper weight loss diet and exercise program. Therefore, creating a one-for-all weight loss or exercise program simply would not work.

Not just any exercise program may do for weight loss. If you have any health problems you should consult a physician before starting any weight loss program. Keep in mind, too, that your weight loss program may most likely include some physical exercise.

Chrysler files for bankruptcy, Fiat Group SpA to run company

Friday, May 1, 2009

The American auto company Chrysler filed for bankruptcy Thursday, however a deal with European auto maker Fiat went through. The emerging Chrysler will be owned 55 percent by the United Auto Workers, eight percent by the United States Government, two percent by the Canadian Government and Fiat would begin with a 20 percent share.

Chrysler Chief Executive Robert Nardelli will step down when the bankruptcy proceedings are finalized.

Initially, the Italian company, Fiat, will appoint three members on the emerging Chrysler’s new board, and the United States government will appoint six. Fiat can assume the majority of the ownership upon repayment of American loans.

Chrysler administrators expect that the bankruptcy should take a couple of months.

“We expect this to be a very short, 30-to-60-day bankruptcy process, during which the company will function normally,” a top administration official said, “People will be able to buy cars, they will have their warranties honored, and everything should go on normally.”

The bankruptcy filing indicated that Chrysler was in debt to 20 creditors to a tune of more than $10 million each.

Meanwhile, the deal with Fiat did go through, and Chrysler should have cars designed by Fiat out on the market by 2011.

“It’s a partnership that will give Chrysler a chance not only to survive, but to thrive in a global auto industry,” said American president Obama, “Fiat has demonstrated that it can build the clean, fuel-efficient cars that are the future of the industry.”

However, automotive analyst Erich Merkle has hesitations.

“History would show that alliances really don’t work that well,” Merkle said, “even though, no matter how good they may look on paper.”

The restructuring has been managed by Steve Rattner, a former investment banker, and the U.S. Government auto task force.

Obama has set three ultimatums before Fiat. Fiat should produce a 40 mile per gallon vehicle while managing the new Chrysler, transfer fuel efficient Fiat technology to Chrysler factories in the United States, and produce cars in Chrysler factories and distribute them in Europe.

Controversial Queensland Premier of 19 years dies at 94

Saturday, April 23, 2005Queensland Australia’s Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen, a controversial figure who served as the State’s Premier for 19 years and reigned over the government that later became the subject of the Fitzgerald Inquiry, has died in hospital at Kingaroy, aged 94.

“By any measurement, Sir Joh was an exceptional state builder who will be remembered for consistently placing Queensland first,” said the Australian Governor General, Major General Jeffery, in a statement.

Australian Prime Minister, John Howard: “He was certainly a strong political figure and I extend my condolences to his wife and his family.”

But not all voices were sympathetic, prominent Queensland Aboriginal activist Sam Watson for example: “Aboriginal people will always remember him as a racist, a thug and a dictator.”

Having suffered severe ill-health for some weeks, and declining health for years, Sir Joh passed away at around 6pm AEST. He was surrounded by his family, who had been summoned yesterday by Lady Flo, his wife and one-time Senator, for final goodbyes.

Phrases such as “Don’t you worry about that” and “Goodness gracious me” were like trademarks to the maverick leader.

Known simply as ‘Joh’ to many, he would famously describe press conferences as ‘feeding the chooks’. Today Kingaroy locals taunted waiting press with cries from “You’re chooks, you’re chooks, ha ha” to “Go home, ya vultures”, and some obscenities, reported the Courier-Mail of Brisbane.

His fall from power at the end of the 80s was surrounded in controversy, with the state embroiled in corruption findings going to the level of his deputies, and Bjelke Petersen’s claims of ignorance coming under challenge with charges of perjury. The case was never heard due to a controversial hung jury: the foreman of the jury, Luke Shaw, had been an office-bearer of the Young Nationals — an arm of Bjelke Petersen’s National Party — as well as a member of a group calling themselves ‘Friends of Joh’.

Having had his start in life as a peanut farmer in remote Kingaroy, the former Premier was fit up until the very end, but palsy was paralyzing his muscles and organs, to which he eventually succumbed.

“Throughout his life Sir Joh combined enormous energy, vision and an immense capacity for hard work, most especially during his 19-year term as Premier of Queensland,” the Governor General said.

“What looked to us to be huge risks at the time turned out to be nation building,” said Bob Katter, a former minister of Joh’s Government, who credited Sir Joh with starting the Queensland coal, aluminum and tourism industries.

He is also remembered for dismantling many of the State’s unions, and for a somewhat totalitarian and heavy handed style of keeping control.

Under Joh, street protests were banned and Special Branch monitored extensively those the authoritarian leader saw as subversives, measures prompting Queenslander, Australian Civil Liberties Council, Terry O’Gorman, to comment Sir Joh was “the most appalling premier Queensland has ever had in terms of civil liberties and human rights”.

Joh was also influential in the famous case of the Dismissal by the Governor General of then-Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, in 1975.

In his last years as Premier, he had taken his cause to the nation’s capital, with the “Joh for PM” campaign. But this distraction has been credited with the downfall of his government, with corruption investigations at last being conducted by his stand-in, Bill Gunn.

The body of Sir Joh, who was of Lutheran faith, is to be buried at Bethany, the family property near Kingaroy.

Unsolicited quotes from ordinary Australians, many ex-Queenslanders seeking refuge in southern states, on hearing the news:

“Corrupt f*cking sh*teating Bible-bashing f*ckw*t is dead. And thank f*ck. I haven’t been so happy since September 11!” — “Greg”

“I don’t drink but I’ll be having a red whilst dancing on his grave.” — “Cellest”

“Ding dong the d*ck is dead!” — anon.

“Yeahhh!!! Fucking finally” — “Leo”

“It’s a great day today the Rednecks are silent a great victory has been won” — “Zenner”

Mothers around the world on Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 10, 2009

Mother’s Day was established on the second Sunday in May by Anna Jarvis after her mother passed away. Former United States President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the inaugural Mother’s Day in 1914.

“Miss Jarvis thought Mother’s Day should be a day you spend with your mother, or a day when you do something special for her like fix her dinner or repair her broken stairs,” said an archivist at Mary Baldwin College. “Mother’s Day has nothing to do with candy,” said Jarvis, “It’s really a shame to waste flowers for Mother’s Day.”

This year again, the American congress approved the observance and requested the president to call upon citizens to partake in the time honoured recognition of this tradition. “I, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 10, 2009, as Mother’s Day. I urge all Americans to express their love, respect, and gratitude to mothers everywhere, and I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”

Tara McDonald, the mother of abducted Woodstock, Ontario eight year old, Victoria (Tori) Stafford, said “I would really hope to have my child home for Mother’s Day.” McDonald said that dealing with Tori’s absence since April 8 has resulted in “times when I sit in my house and bawl my eyes out and I curl up into a ball and I sob.”

61 year old Lynda McDade graduated Saturday from the University of Detroit along with her two daughters.

A mother under court order forbidding her access to her three children for three years was thrown in jail for approaching her child and telling him she loved him. The mother has been accused of turning the children against the father, a rich City financier who now has custody of the family’s children.

Gloria Steele, Acting Assistant Administrator for Global Health honours the 20th anniversary of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), “Women make extraordinary contributions as caregivers and caretakers, as well as breadwinners and bread-makers. By averting maternal death and disability that cost families and communities so much, we can improve the productive capacity of women in their own nations”

Nadya Suleman, known as Octomom is spending this mother’s day weekend in a California hospital undergoing uterine surgery. This operation will also make Suleman’s family complete with fourteen children as she will no longer be able to physcially conceive a child following the surgery.

Mary Ann Wright, known as “Mother Wright”, died Thursday in Oakland, California, but not before achieving renown as advocate for the poor, and feeding the hungry. She founded the Mother May Ann Wright Foundation from her modest beginnings sparing meals to others while subsisting herself on Social Security checks.

Maree Vaile is a mother of three who was humbled by New Zealand’s Mother of the Year award. Her husband and children recognised the adversity the family has overcome and wanted to show their appreciation by nominating her in the “Mums on Top” online competition.

In Taiwan, students from South Taiwan who attend University in North Taiwan could board a special train provided by the Taiwan Railway Adminsitration so they could visit their mothers on Mother’s Day. “Give your mother a hug, a big and strong hug, because love is not only a noun, it is also a verb,” President Ma Ying-jeou said, “The older mothers grow, the greater is their need to feel needed. So we should show our love for our mother.”

At least fifteen dead after stampede at Mali mosque

Friday, February 26, 2010

According to a government official, at least 26 people were killed in a stampede on Thursday at a historic mosque in the northwestern city of Timbuktu, Mali.

“There were 26 killed and 40 wounded,” Oumar Sangare, the Internal Ministry spokesman, told Reuters. However, other news agency reports put the death toll as low as fifteen.

An official, who requested to remain anonymous, said the accident could have begun as a result of renovation work on the Djingareyber mosque—which is made primarily of mud, and was built in the fourteenth century. Construction work blocked off some of the roads, and that could have been a factor in the incident. “The mosque is being renovated, financed by the Aga Khan, and the work is carried out by South African specialists,” the official told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

“Because of these renovations, the passage on the north side of the mosque is closed off. On that side, to get through, the faithful found an improvised alleyway. But the alley couldn’t take the number of people using it. So there was a stampede. Somebody shouted ‘someone has died’ and panic took over,” the same official went on to say.

Others have remarked that rescue services responded “very quickly” to the stampede, and helped the “many injured.”

The Xinhua news agency reports the stampede started when an elderly woman fell in one of the town streets near the city’s main mosque, where a sermon was being conducted in front of a large crowd; a passersby then rushed to assist the woman, apparently disrupting the crowd’s movement and causing the stampede.

“People were circling the mosque, a ritual at each Mouloud [the observance of the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday] and there was a huge crowd build up,” commented Mohamed Bandjougou, one of the witnesses to the event, to AFP by telephone. “There were at least fifteen dead. The bodies were taken to the morgue.”

Authorities warned the number of injured may actually be higher than reported, saying that “we cannot rule out the fact that the number of those injured will increase because some of them are still hiding in their homes instead of coming to the hospital.” A hospital source commented that some of the people hurt were in critical condition, and needed to be evacuated to the capital, Bamako, as soon as possible.

The mosque’s imam, who gave his name as Asseyuti, commented on the incident. “We’re in mourning. What happened is a real trauma. We accept the will of God. He gives us life, he takes it away,” he said.

According to an official statement, Malian president Amandou Toumani Toure is traveling to Timbuktu from Bamako in light of the stampede.

Hoax Calling: The Dangers And Preventions

Hoax calling: The dangers and preventions

by

Kerry Lawrence

Making hoax calls to the Fire Brigade is extremely irresponsible and dangerous; as I’m sure many of you reading this are already aware. Sadly there are thousands of irresponsible individuals out there who aren’t aware or simply don’t care about the danger they put people in by making hoax calls. In 2007 alone the Fire Services attended 21,000 incidents across the country that were the result of hoax calls and in total there were nearly 38,000 fraud calls made.

Prank calls of this nature put members of the public in serious danger. When fire crews are busy responding to false alarms their resources can’t be used to help people who are genuinely in danger. Hoax calls are also very costly for the tax payer, with The Times estimating that 42 million a year is wasted by the Fire Service responding to these types of calls.

Here at Active Fire Management we spend a lot of time consulting businesses on how they can improve fire safety on their commercial properties. A major element to our consultation is ensuring the accessibility of fire exits in your property. The reason we do this is because time is your most valuable commodity in a fire. Extra minutes or seconds exposed to smoke can have serious and even fatal consequences. Even with fire exits and sufficient fire equipment in place, hoax callers can still put you and your staff in serious danger.

The fire service’s response times are dramatically increased if they have to spend extra time dealing with hoax calls.. A horrific example of this occurred in Lancashire in 1996 when five year old Jason Walsh was killed in a fire after crews were unable to get to him in time because they had been responding to a hoax call.

So what can we do to stop hoax calls? The majority of callers are children and teenagers, so a certain amount of responsibility rests with parents. If you have young children we would recommend teaching them, from a young age, about the consequences of hoax calling. Your local fire service would happily allow you to visit the station where they can speak to fire fighters and learn about the repercussions within a friendly but authoritative environment. Children, particularly young boys, respond really well because they idolise fire crews and will naturally respect the information passed on to them.

If your children are older we would recommend showing them stories in the papers, as well as news coverage on the TV. Most teenagers’ behaviour is strongly influenced by their peers, so arranging time for your children and their friends to learn about the risks of hoax calling together could be extremely beneficial.

There are strict punishments for individuals found guilty of hoax calling. The emergency services make a record of all the calls they receive; any suspect phone numbers are passed on to the police for them to make further enquires. Most guilty callers who are caught face a fine of up to 5,000 and a criminal record; however repeat offenders can expect a custodial sentence of around six months. Reminding your children of the punishments they could face if caught and the long term consequences should hopefully deter them.

The Fire Service understands that a minority of young people, for whatever reason, are not educated on the risks surrounding hoax calling. This is why they actively run national advertising and promotional campaigns, outlining the dangers.

As well as running advertising campaigns, the Avon Fire Service has also taken a more direct approach to preventing hoax calls. They have set up a system where phone operators send text messages to mobile phones that have been used for hoax calls. When a phone is first used they are sent a warning message saying if they continue they will have their phone cut off. If the same mobile is for a second time, the operator passes on the details to the relevant mobile phone provider, who then disconnects the phone. The scheme has been an absolute success, with 70% of people who received the first text message have resisted in making further calls.

Sadly there isn’t anything one individual or organisation can do to prevent hoax calling altogether. However, it’s important that collectively we remain vigilant and at all times and work towards identifying criminals in your local area. In simple terms, hoax calls highlight just how important it is to have comprehensive fire procedures in your work place.

Although we would never suggest that you should try to take on the work of the Fire Service, there are a number of steps you can take to help save them valuable time in the event of a fire. For example, if you appoint a responsible person to call a register of everyone in your building at a prearranged meeting place, fire fighters will know straight away if someone is missing. This may not sound like a lot, but if a fire crew is already running late due to a hoax call, having out this kind of information immediately will compensate lost time.

If you would like information or training on how to improve fire safety at your work place, please get it touch with us to discuss our fire protection services. We can arrange to carry out a proper fire risk assessment that will work out what needs to be improved in your workplace to make it safer for you and your staff.
