Homeless Columbus, Ohio man with ‘god-given gift of voice’ becomes YouTube sensation

Friday, January 7, 2011

Ted Williams, a former radio announcer from Columbus in Ohio, United States, has become a YouTube sensation after a video of the homeless man talking to a local reporter was uploaded onto the website.

In the YouTube video, he can be seen standing on the exit ramp of Interstate 71 at Hudson Street, holding a sign claiming that he has “the god-given gift of a great voice” and that he had “fallen on hard times”, as well as speaking to Doral Chenoweth III from daily newspaper The Columbus Dispatch. Upon being asked to “[s]ay something with that great radio voice”, he replied: “When you’re listening to nothing but the best of oldies, you’re listening to Magic 98.9. Thank you so much. God bless you. Thank you. And we’ll be back with more right after these words.”

In the video, Williams also mentions how “alcohol and drugs and a few other things became a part of my life and I got two years clean and I’m trying hard to get it back.” This video achieved in excess of eleven and a half million YouTube views since the video was uploaded on January 3, 2011. However, the original video has now been removed because of a copyright violation claim made by The Dispatch. Copies of the clip are currently still available to view online.

I’m just so, so happy. I had no idea that something like this would have ever happened to me. It’s phenomenal.

Subsequently, Williams received interest from companies wishing to offer occupations, including Ohio basketball team Cleveland Cavaliers — who offered a house to him — and NFL Films, according to the Associated Press. Stating that “It’s that voice,” Kevin McLoughlin described: “When I heard him tell his story, I said, ‘That’s what we do. This guy can tell a story.’ Somehow, some way, I need to get a demo with him.” McLoughlin also believed that “[t]he man deserves a second chance”. Kraft Cheese have also made an announcing job offer to him.

When asked about the effect of this YouTube sensation in an interview with CBS News, he exclaimed: “It’s just sensational for one, it’s numbing for another, overwhelming … It’s just amazing. … Well, I’ve already been characterized as Susan Boyle. … I’m just so, so happy. … I had no idea that something like this would have ever happened to me. It was like, almost, winning the Mega Ball lottery. … It’s phenomenal.”

Having attempted to make contact with his mother, aged 92, in New York, Williams met with her for the first time in approximately twenty years in a hotel in New York, New York on Thursday, according to msnbc.com. He greeted his mother by repeatedly saying the words: “Hi, mommy.”

This story has been likened to the occasion when Susan Boyle became a YouTube sensation in 2009 after a video of her audition on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ was uploaded there. The video was viewed over nine million times within the space of five days.

Lunch Boxes Preserves Freshness Of The Food

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

On remembering ourschool days, the fun and frolic during recess is incomplete without the lunchboxes. Those little goodies tucked away in little boxes are one of thefinest memories of our childhood. Even today the trend continues, because letsface it, as a kid, everyone is anxious to see what the other kid has brought.Barter systems and trading boxes has always been the highlight of recess andwill always remain the same for years to come.

The reason is simple, when we are little these small things formulate what we become in the future. The little boxes are coated with lively animated exteriors so that children canenjoy the sight of their favourite characters. The boxes change theirappearance as one grows older and the animated exteriors get converted to plainstainless steel or plastic. This gradual change is a depiction of mental growthand change in preference. These boxes have one thing in common over the years, and that is moms home cooked meals that cannot be substituted by any cafeteriapreparation.

The Tiffinbox is the local term that depicts a container that carries food. Itcan be the simple ones that a child takes to school or it can be the layeredone that holds a full fledges meal for an office goer. Irrespective of itsdestination, the box does one common thing and that is preservation offoodstuffs to keep freshness intact. The humidity in the atmosphere tends tosteal away the warmth and taste from the perishable elements but these airtightcontainers help preserve the moisture content of the food. If the edible foodpreparations are kept in the open for a long period of time then it tends towither away and rot. To prevent the occurrence of this, one must store food inairtight boxes. Over the years the Tiffin has been utilised for variousoccasions like picnics, social gatherings, school or even office. The Tiffinservices also utilise this product to provide fresh food to the client.

Lunch boxes can be used in many occasions as its modusoperandi is to preserve food. Hence, on trips or long drives, it is better tocarry home cooked meals instead of resorting to unhealthy snacking on the way.The eminence of this product has increased as the demand has increased. Lately, the diversity in designs makes it visually appealing that attracts a lot ofcustomers. The Tiffin box is often termed as lunchcarriers as they tend to carry food as well as preserve its taste and flavours.Tiffin in fact, is a slang derived from the obsolete British word Tiffin which meanstaking a sip but its meaning was modified to a light meal or lunch. Inreality, Tiffin does not necessarily mean a light meal; it can be any form offood in a box. The interesting fact is that this simple term has led to a wholeenterprise called the Tiffin service where people provide food to clients onregular basis, by following a well-knit system and policies.

Prosecutors begin NY State Sen. Hiram Monserrate felony assault case

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

At the opening of the criminal trial against New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate on Monday on charges of felony assault, prosecutors explained the motive behind his alleged attack on his girlfriend Karla Giraldo.

During opening arguments in the case, prosecutor Scott Kessler stated that when Monserrate discovered that his girlfriend had the business card of another man, he chose to strike out at her. According to prosecutor Kessler, Monserrate “struck her in a jealous rage”. Monserrate has entered a plea of not guilty to charges he sliced his girlfriend’s face with broken glass during a conflict at their apartment in December 2008.

“He struck her in a jealous rage.”

According to the account given in court by prosecutors, Giraldo asked her boyfriend Monserrate for a glass of water. Prosecutors said that in response, Monserrate stated “You want the water? You want the water? Here’s your water!” – and proceeded to cut her face using the glass. At the hospital, Giraldo reportedly told healthcare workers: “I can’t believe he did this to me. My face! My face!”.

“What happened was an accident.”

The defense team denied that the injury to the woman by Monserrate was intentional, instead claiming that the incident was “an accident”. Monserrate’s lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, said “What happened was an accident. There were only two people behind those closed doors and they both say it was an accident. You wonder why they even brought this case. It’s nothing more than rank speculation.” In Tacopina’s account of the incident, Monserrate was bringing his girlfriend a glass of water and tripped – and Giraldo woke up and the glass collided into her face. Tacopina characterized her injuries as “a freak accident”.

Kessler asserted that the incident was not an accident on the part of Monserrate. Referring to Monserrate’s emotions at the time of the incident, Kessler said “This case is about power and control. He didn’t just want that card thrown out, he wanted it destroyed.” According to prosecutors in the case, Giraldo originally stated to law enforcement officials that she had been attacked, and said to a nurse at the hospital where she was treated that her boyfriend had cut her face. The injuries to Giraldo’s face necessitated 20 stitches in the area surrounding her left eye. After Giraldo found out that Monserrate would be arrested in the matter, she recanted her statements.

Supreme Court Justice William Erlbaum will judge the case without a jury, as Monserrate waived his right for a trial before his peers. If convicted, Democrat Sen. Monserrate could serve prison time and lose his New York State Senate seat.

“Send a message that violence against women must be stopped and perpetrators must be brought to justice.”

The group National Organization for Women has requested that the judge rule Monserrate should be given “the maximum sentence allowable by law”. In an email to supporters, the organization said: “Call or write the Honorable William M. Erlbaum. Send a message that violence against women must be stopped and perpetrators must be brought to justice.” Included was a form letter with the message: “I implore you to do the right thing by punishing Senator Monserrate, giving him the maximum sentence allowable by law. By doing so, you will be sending a very important message and that is that violence against women is a serious crime.”

In response to complaints from Monserrate’s attorney that the group’s actions were inappropriate, the president of the organization in New York Marcia Pappas said “We’re imploring him to do the right thing. I’m sure the judge knows what he needs to do, so his position is not compromised.”

Monserrate is a former city councilman. He became a member of the New York State Senate weeks after the conflict with Giraldo, and was made chair of the committee overseeing consumer affairs. Along with Democrat Pedro Espada Jr., Monserrate started a shift in control of the Senate by aligning with the Republican Party.

Factors To Consider In Choosing A Computer

By David H. Urmann

Computers are essential for home and office use. There are preassembled units available for non technical users.

Computers have improved a lot in terms of performance and multi-tasking. There has been an increased demand of these electronic devices lately because computers are now important machines used in everyday work.

Computers come in different models and vary in specifications and design. Some individuals who do not have technical knowledge on computers purchase the preassembled ones while people who understand the basics better choose the parts and assemble it on their own. Assembling your own computer is best because you have more options to mix and match the parts based on your needs and budget.

Deciding on what computer to buy can be a challenging task. This article will provide you information on what factors to consider so you can decide what kind of computer will best work for you.

If you do not have the technical know-how, it is advisable to purchase preassembled units. You can ask assistance from to see what kind of setup will work best in your work lifestyle and budget. Purchase the computer from an authorized dealer so that your unit will have a warranty.

Whether you are buying preassembled PC or want to assemble your own, it is important to know the components and its functions so you can have a basis of your decision.

The most important part of the computer is the CPU. It is considered the brain of the computer. It is responsible for the overall speed whenever it is processing any task.

There are two manufacturers who have dominated the market in producing processors. They are the AMD and Intel. Intel’s most popular processors include the Pentium based and Celeron. Meanwhile, the AMD’s flagship is the Athlon and Sempron based processors. AMD processors are generally cheaper than Intel’s.

The motherboard is the device where all the parts and devices are attached. Some motherboard comes with onboard components which include video card, sound card, LAN card and modem. It is also important to consider what devices you are going to attach to the ports of the motherboard, and buy accordingly.

The RAM (random access memory) is the part responsible for the overall performance of the computer. The bigger the RAM, the faster the computer can process data. If you have enough budget, purchase the maximum RAM supported by your motherboard.

The video card is another important component. The quality of the image is due to the capacity of the video card. If you are into graphics designing and gaming, it is best to choose the highest memory of video card 3D capable. The high quality video card is also advisable to those who are fond of watching movies in their computer.

The hard drive is the storage device where all programs and games are installed and all other files are stored. If you love to collect a lot of videos and graphics, it is best to choose the highest capacity of storage. It is measured in terms of gigabytes.

The sound card is the part which processes audio signals going to the speaker. If you are going to connect your computer to a 5.1 speaker, then you should choose the best sound card capable of producing a surround sound. This is important when playing a lot of music, watching videos or playing video games often.

The power supply is responsible in powering your computer. It should be able to supply the necessary power for all the components of the computer. Never use cheap types because it is prone to seriously damage any of the components of the computer if it malfunctions.

Also consider the bundled software which includes the operating system, productivity software, anti virus and many other useful applications. If you are going to use other software you need for your work, make sure that the computer is capable of running it without any problem. Consider the compatibility of your software versus the specifications of your computer unit.

Also, list down other devices you may want to include to complete your computer setup.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Frequently Asked Questions On Services Of An Electrician

1. Can the small electric tasks at home be managed on our own?

In Australian mainland, it is illegal for anyone to carry out any domestic electrical jobs such as wiring or installations of appliances without a license. Its not just risky but even if the work is upto the marking standards, it will not pass certification unless a qualified electrician undertakes it. This is even more important if you ever plan to sell the property. Further, the risk is always there or your near and dear ones since it’s not assured and tested by a professional.

2. Why does an electrician need to be licensed?

Only a licensed electrician can grant a Certificate of Compliance. It is essentially a legal document for the government which is signed by your qualified electrician on completion of the job. It basically states that the electric work was completed in compliance with the set standards of Electricity Act 1996 and hence meets all the necessary safety protocols. The Certificate can only be issued by a licensed electrician and remains with the customer for record keeping.

3. What is the avg. cost of having an electrician do repairs/installations?

Costs lie anywhere between $50 to $100 per hour, completely depending on the electrician’s experience and qualifications and the complexity of the task at hand. This fees only includes the service charges of the electrician and not any parts or spare tools.

4. How is an RCD different from a fuse?

A residual current device is just not designed to stop a circuit from overloading. It is used to prevent a fatal shock if someone touches a live wire. This level of protection is far beyond what you can get with the typical older wire fuses found in homes that were built more than a decade ago.

5. What all services can an electrician provide?

Depending on whether you are looking to get your home serviced or a commercial/ official space of yours, services and their scale varies. Services can include maintenance jobs & servicing, installation of Home Theatre & Multi-Room Audio, full house wiring, data communications, Ventilation Solutions, Lighting design & installations/audit/repair, AC servicing and installation, Security CCTVs and alarms, Heat Pumps, Solar Power Systems, Underfloor heating, automated home systems.

6. What does Home Automation essentially mean?

By better designing, programming and integrating your electrical appliances, clever home automation enables your family to enjoy greater comfort and security in your home. By making it easier for you to pick and integrate the home automation that best fits you and your family, we help you build your dream home.

‘Future proofing’, easy usage, aesthetics or energy savings include home automation advantages.

The spectrum of home automation can range from organised cabling for telephone, video intercom, internet, LAN and video, to automatic control of electric motorised blinds, motorised roller shutters, watering, air-conditioning, exhaust fans, ceiling fans, and other appliances, through home theatre and multi-room audio, automated lighting control, protection and keyless entry.

7. What is Smart Wiring? Can I install it myself?

Smart Wiring is an industry wiring standard that allows numerous telephones, Internet, fax, PAY-TV options, as well as security, audio, home automation lighting, and garden irrigation features to be accessed once installed.

The professional installers are not just experienced but also highly qualified. They are licenced and electrical cablers, who have also undergone specific accreditation training in the Smart Wired system. Only Smart Wired certified installers can install the system.

8. What makes copper wiring a first choice compared to other?

The copper wiring solutions meet all the Australian Standards and work well universally for all systems alike. Its installation is also cheaper, the product is more durable and effective than any other system that includes optic fibre or wireless systems. Its uniqueness lies in the ability to carry large amounts of data smoothly and quickly.

Neuroscientists tell Wikinews about empathy and harm aversion observed in lab rats

Thursday, April 30, 2020

In findings published last month in the journal Current Biology, neuroscientists from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience examined harm aversion in laboratory rats for conspecifics — rats not wanting to hurt other members of the same species — and reported which region of the brain was crucial for it. Wikinews caught up with Dr Christian Keysers and Dr Valeria Gazzola, two of the authors who contributed to the paper.

For the experiment, the rats were put in a container with two levers. The rats were trained to develop a preference for one of the two levers: each delivering one pellet of sucrose. One of the two levers was harder to press.

After developing a preference, the preferred lever was wired to deliver a shock to another rat in a neighbouring compartment, while delivering a single pellet of sucrose. The study showed the actor rat, which pressed the lever tend to switch the lever to avoid shocking the other rat. The rat receiving the shock was called a victim rat.

Aversion of harm to fellow rats was reported to be equal in both male and female rats. If the actor rats were previously exposed to the shocks, their degree of harm aversion for others was heightened, the study revealed.

The investigation reported the rats avoided pressing the preferred lever to shock another rat, even if that lever delivered two sucrose pellets and the no-harm lever delivered only one. However, this was not the case when the rats were given three pellets by the shock lever. Most of the actor rats did not switch when they received three pellets pressing the lever, which also delivered an electric shock. Dr Gazzola called it a “tipping point” and said it was a “cost-benefit” function.

The study also revealed the importance of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) region of the rat’s brain for harm aversion. The scientists tested harm aversion for conspecifics in the rodents after deactivating the ACC using muscimol. Muscimol was injected in the rats belonging to the test group, while saline water was injected to rats in the control group. The observations showed without the active ACC due to muscimol, the active rats in the test group were no longer averse to harming the victim rats, but degree of harm aversion did not drop in the control group rats.

Summer Body Basics

by

Stephanie Elms –

Preparing to walk out before the world in a swim suits this summer can be intimidating, that is unless you know a few tricks to get you ready. A little diet modification, some simple exercise, and selecting a swim suit based on your body type can dramatically change the way you look and feel this summer.

The Diet o Balance is key! Dont skip meals, just make sure the meals you eat are of good nutritional quality and proportions are appropriate for your goals (this means keep junk food to a minimum). Of course, eating lots of fruits and veggies are a great way to feel full without adding major calories (that is if you skip all the awesome sauces and dips that accompany these). If you are going out to eat, consider a healthy appetizer or a salad before the meal to decrease the amount of calorie dense foods you may consume in the entre. When faced with the urge to snack, opt for healthier foods such as fruit, veggie sticks, yogurt, mixed nuts, and protein bars or shakes. Lots of water is also a key. It helps to curb cravings and hunger pains, but is also very healthy and good for the body and skin. If you arent a fan of plain water, add a bit of lemon, lime, or orange wedge, a cucumber slice, or a sprig of mint. Adding the flavored packets, thought they may be fat free and sugar free, still add calories our bodies dont need. When enjoying an alcoholic beverage, consider lower calorie options. Keeping a food journal can be helpful to see where you are falling off pace if you dont seem to be getting the results you desire. Remember, the goal is not to deprive yourself, but rather to control yourself. Forgiveness is a must because no matter if you have the strongest will power in the world, you will get off track. Start over each new day and eventually healthy eating will become a habit. The Exercise o Consider exercises that will enhance the areas seem most in a swim suit. Whether going to the gym or working out at home, incorporate at least 90 minutes of cardiovascular activity each week. You can break this up into however many minute sessions you choose and on how many days you choose. Remember, you dont have to stick with one method. If you bore easily with exercise, consider getting a pair of roller blades, playing tennis, going on a bicycle ride, or just walking. You can jump rope or even do jumping jacks for added variety. Keeping goals realistic and able to fit exercise into your schedule will help make you more successful. For toning, lunges and squats are great for the buttock, legs, and even the abs. Simple crunches (there are many varieties) are great for showing off a toned stomach during the summer. For arms, push ups are great as they work many muscles at once. If you prefer the gym, a series of machines that target the biceps, triceps, and deltoids are great for sculpting. The Swimsuit o Just in case your eating and exercising hasnt yet gotten you to your desired goal, consider your body type when choosing a swim suit. Choose darker colors as they can be very slimming and opt for minimal patterns because patterns can draw attention to unwanted areas. Suits with spandex are good because they help to hold areas in place. Padding and push ups can aid in adding cleavage and underwire can add support for a fuller chest. If you want to minimize a fuller chest, a suit with a full bottom, perhaps a skirt, will help balance the overall look. For a longer body consider a one piece and for shorter frames a one or two piece with a high cut on the hip can be elongating. A tankini can be good to give the impression of an hourglass figure. Now that you know what you need to do to rock the beach this summer, the rest is up to you. A little work can go a long way, even if you dont have much time. Whatever progress you make, confidence will soon follow, ensuring you look and feel your sexiest this summer! For additional must-know tips visit www.verysupersexylingerie.com.

Ericsson’s CEO Tours Marconi Sites

Tuesday, November 1, 2005

Carl-Henric Svanberg, CEO of Ericsson, began a tour of some of Marconi’s European sites this morning, starting at Coventry and moving to Beeston for the afternoon session. Genoa and Backnang will be visited on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mike Parton, CEO of Marconi Corporation, spoke of the ‘good news’ for all stake-holders and introduced Svanberg to a round of applause from the majority of the staff at Coventry New Century Park, while more staff from Coventry New Horizon Park listened on a conference call line.

The purpose of the tour is to communicate to approx. Eighty percent of Marconi’s staff and allow them to ask questions about the asset purchase proposed by Ericsson.
