Microsoft announces plan to acquire GitHub for US$7.5 billion

Wednesday, June 6, 2018

On Monday, United States technology giant Microsoft announced their plans to acquire GitHub, a San Francisco, California-based web-based hosting service for software version control using Git, for 7.5 billion US Dollars (USD).

In the official announcement at the Microsoft News web site, the company said they are to reach agreement with GitHub by the end of the year. They said the agreement would allow them to deliver Microsoft development services to GitHub users, and “accelerate enterprise use of GitHub”. GitHub had been financially struggling recently and is expected to get a new CEO.

In 2016, according to financial news and media company Bloomberg L.P., through three quarters GitHub lost USD 66 million, while in nine months of that year GitHub had revenue of USD 98 million. In August 2017 GitHub said they were seeking a new CEO. According to the announcements by GitHub and Microsoft, the Microsoft Corporate Vice President Nat Friedman would become the new CEO of GitHub. He had created app creation platform company Xamarin and was “an open-source veteran”, Microsoft said.

GitHub confirmed the acquisition plans on its blog. In this announcement they alluded to concerns about past friction between Microsoft and open-source software, however they said “things are different. […] Microsoft is the most active organization on GitHub in the world”, mentioning VS Code as an example. In the announcement, GitHub also referred to its several years of collaboration with Microsoft on Git LFS and Electron. GitHub also mentioned the Azure development platform run by Microsoft.

Shower Enclosures with Heavy Glass Shower Doors are Best for Bath Remodel

by

Christy MartinWhen it comes time to renovate your bathroom look into getting rid of your old bathtub in favor of new shower enclosures with heavy glass shower doors. Most people never really needed their old bathtubs as for the most part they take showers every morning and never really use the bathtub. A shower enclosure with a heavy glass shower door is a great option for your bathroom remodel.

You might have seen really nice shower enclosures with heavy glass shower doors and multiple shower heads on television and wanted something like that for your bathroom. There are a number of shower enclosures that are very nice. Different types of glass and stone works make them elegant and very easy to clean. Some even come with a coating preventing soap scum and calcium deposits from building up along the shower walls and door.

Shower enclosures are good because they seals in the heat and steam making it kind of like a sauna as you shower. A shower curtain also needs replacing fairly often with the amount of grime that can build up on it after a long period of use. Shower enclosures with heavy glass shower doors have a much longer lifespan.

When you price out some moderate stone work and a new shower enclosure and heavy glass shower doors look into setting up a dual shower head system to massage and clean in tandem. Your shower should be a very relaxing place for you to enjoy.

You can not have a dual shower head in your old tub with a shower curtain as too much water would probably escape and the plumbing would be a nightmare to leave the bathtub still in use. With heavy glass shower doors to keep the water in and the waterproofing done on the shower enclosures you could have just about as many shower heads as you want.

Make sure you hire a reputable qualified contractor to install your shower enclosures with a heavy glass doors. It will take some time, but in the long run will save you a lot of money and hassles. Afterward you will be able to have a hot massaging shower, with multiple shower heads and keep all the steam and water inside the shower enclosures. You won’t feel like you’re getting attacked by a shower curtain and cleanup is much easier.

Many people are getting a special coating on the heavy glass doors and shower enclosures so any buildup wipes off much easier than ever before. Your bathroom will look so much more elegant and makes you excited to jump in the shower every day. You’ll also find with the shower enclosures there is much less slipping with a flat bottom floor. Even if things do get slippery there are 3 hard walls and heavy glass shower doors with handles to help keep you from slipping and falling down in the shower.

Whether you are looking to update the tired old look of your bathroom, or you need more security in preventing falls or flooding, shower enclosures with a heavy glass shower doors are always an advantage over an old bathtub with a shower curtain. It increases the value of your home, it’s easier to clean and just a luxurious addition to your bathroom.

Participant claims drug trial gave him cancer

Sunday, August 6, 2006

A man who fell ill after participating in a drug trial at Northwick Park Hospital in north-west London earlier this year has revealed he has the early signs of an “aggressive” form of cancer.

David Oakley was one of six men who volunteered to take part in a trial of a drug intended to cure conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and leukemia in March. But after taking the drug, the thirty-five year-old suffered multiple organ failure and prominent inflammation.

Mr Oakley, who lives in west London, told today’s Mail on Sunday that doctors have informed him he has “definite early signs” of lymph cancer. He also fears he could develop other debilitating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and lupus. He will now undergo tests to see what treatments will be required. “It’s very frightening,” he told the newspaper. “I’m trying not to be too down about the thought of having chemotherapy or that I might die.”

Mr Oakley was paid £2,000 for his involvement in the trial, and that money subsidised his marriage to wife Katrina in June. He now fears their hope of having children has been jeopardised as a result of his ill health. “Katrina and I had planned to start trying for children six months after getting married, but we can’t do that now. Everything is on hold.”

There is nothing to suggest that Mr Oakley’s cancer was triggered by the experiment. He is now seeking compensation from Parexel, the company which organised the drug trial. “Really, I’m just trying to do my bit and pointing out their mistake. If someone doesn’t point it out it could happen again and there’s no way I would like to see someone else go through what we’re going through right now.” Earlier this year, six men had to be admitted to an intensive care unit at the same hospital, in another Parexel drug trial which caused much upset.

News services and web companies increase Farsi services in light of Iranian political situation

Friday, June 19, 2009

Several organizations have increased their Farsi services in the wake of the events surrounding the recent presidential election. Google has added Farsi-to-English translation as one of its translation options to its Google Translate service. Similarly, Facebook has launched a Farsi version of its web site. The BBC has increased the number of broadcasting satellites that it uses for its Farsi news channel, BBC Persian Television.

Google’s translation services currently only provide translation from Farsi to English. Franz-Josef Och stated that this was to enable people in Iran to communicate directly via the Internet with the outside world, saying “Like YouTube and other services, Google Translate is one more tool that Persian speakers can use to communicate directly to the world, and vice versa — increasing everyone’s access to information.”. The company states that it is working to provide translation between Farsi and the other 40 languages that it provides on its Translate service.

Facebook’s Farsi version of its web site, which is still marked as a beta-test version, was launched rapidly, with, the company states, the assistance of more than 400 Farsi speakers who submitted translations of the contents of the site.

Both companies state that their reasons for expanding their services are to promote communication, and are not politically motivated.

The BBC has increased the number of broadcasting satellites that it uses for broadcasting its Farsi news channel. This is, it states, in response to signal jamming of its broadcasts by the Iranian government. (The Iranian government accuses BBC Persian Television, which is funded by the British Foreign Office, of being a propaganda service for the British Government.) It states that its broadcasts on the Hot Bird 6 satellite had been aggressively jammed, and that therefore it was now also broadcasting from the Eutelsat W2M satellite, and planned to start broadcasting from Nilesat as well in the near future.

How Covid 19 Has Impacted The Way High School Students Prepare For College

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted virtually every aspect of our day to day lives, from the way we interact with our friends and family to the ways we work, eat, and play. But for high school students especially, the pandemic has also had a significant impact on their ability to plan for the next step in their education journey: college.

High school seniors have, so far, generally been the most impacted by the effects of COVID-19. All of this craziness is happening during the time where they are supposed to be balancing finishing up their high school career with things such as finishing up standardized tests, applying for college, visiting schools, and of course, making plans for how they are going to work to afford their impending college tuition.

All of these pieces in the puzzle that current high school seniors are planning for have been massively interrupted due to many factors such as:

Lack of ability to travel

The pandemic has, of course, made traveling anywhere (whether it’s to the grocery store or across the country) a great safety risk. This means that many current high school seniors will have a harder time taking tours of the schools that they are applying/accepted to, ultimately making the decision of where to enroll in a much more difficult one. To combat this, many colleges and universities have started to offer virtual tours, but, the consensus among most high school seniors is that they certainly don’t compare to being able to step on campus in person.

Family member’s loss of jobs

The unemployment rates since the start of the pandemic have risen to astronomical numbers, and unfortunately, many families with high school and college-aged young adults have not been excluded. This means that many of these students will have more trouble figuring out how they are going to pay the rising prices of college tuition, room and board, textbooks, and more.

Test center closure

While perhaps some high school seniors have finished with the standardized testing process, many were counting on taking tests at the start of their senior year. With lockdowns and restrictions in place, getting this done has proved to be, once again, a very difficult task for high school seniors. If a senior doesn’t have a current score that they are satisfied with using to submit with their applications, the question then becomes “should I even submit a score at all?” as many schools across the country are becoming “test-optional”. However, there is still a cloud of mystery surrounding the logistics of not submitting test scores, and students are left wondering if this will ultimately hurt their chances of getting accepted.

Difficulty balancing the application process with virtual school.

Another problem that high school seniors are encountering is the stress of balancing applying to colleges with virtual/remote school. After speaking to several high school seniors, I was informed that school being remote has certainly not led to it being any easier. In fact, teachers have been using this as an opportunity to provide students with even more work, which ultimately cuts into the time that students can spend on perfecting their college essays, sending off applications, and doing other essential college planning.

So, you may be wondering, what can high school seniors do during these crazy times to take action towards reducing at least some of the stresses that they may be feeling? When it comes to easing some of the financial burdens that COVID-19 has caused, one solution is to apply for scholarships! Scholarship money is money that, unlike loans, does not need to be paid back ever. This means that all high school seniors should start, if they haven’t already, with applying for scholarships to help ease some of the impending financial burdens that they are soon to face upon graduating from high school and starting college.

The process of applying for scholarships may seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Check out this post on great scholarship opportunities for high school seniors to help get you started.

Thai police, protesters in violent clashes; at least one dead

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Protesters in Thailand clashed today with government police, killing at least one soldier and wounding eighteen more in what media reported as being a “very tense and intense standoff.”

The violence, unusually outside of the center of Bangkok, included Thai security forces firing on protesters, apparently with both rubber bullets and live ammunition, which police had been authorized to use in self-defense. The conflict took place along a highway that a convoy of protesters was travelling along; government forces were trying to disperse the demonstrators.

Casualties of the fighting included one dead — a soldier apparently killed by friendly fire — and at least eighteen injured, including eight demonstrators. Government forces had, according to reports, fired both into the air and into the protestors from behind defenses such as razor wire and concrete pilings in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

The demonstrators have largely paralyzed the city of Bangkok for the past seven weeks in protests that have killed at least 26 people. Largely rural and urban poor, they say they will not leave until the Thai prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, resigns and new elections are held; many support former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, and consider they were deprived of their votes when he was ousted in a coup in 2006. The fighting has led to constant rumors of a military crackdown on the city.

Satirist Stephen Colbert runs for U.S. President

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

The American satirist Stephen Colbert has announced that he will run for the Presidency of the United States. He made his announcement on his mock news show The Colbert Report.

However, Colbert said that he would only run in his home state of South Carolina as a favorite son. He also said that he would represent both major political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. It is not known how far Colbert will go with his character during his electoral run.

Colbert has hosted The Colbert Report, a spin-off to another satirical television series, The Daily Show, since its creation in 2005. “I didn’t have a job back then. I wonder what it was like to have a job back then. I am sure I could ask a dentist or a surgeon. He would know.” On the show he plays a right-wing political pundit, based on real-life pundits such as Bill O’Reilly and Stone Phillips. Colbert has been credited with popularizing certain words such as “Truthiness”, meaning to believe something intuitively, without regard for actual facts, logic or evidence.

Filling in for New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd on Sunday, Colbert wrote: “I am not ready to announce yet — even though it’s clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative.”

Two separate fighter jet crashes kill two, injure two in Afghanistan

Monday, July 20, 2009

A United States fighter jet crash on Saturday has claimed the lives of the two American pilots onboard in eastern Afghanistan, and a NATO fighter crash at Kandahar Airfield has injured two more pilots today.

The latest crash is the fifth in the space of a week. On Tuesday a helicopter was shot down, killing seven civilians. Yesterday a NATO-chartered helicopter crashed at Kandahar Airfield, killing sixteen, and another helicopter landed heavily elsewhere, injuring several people. Only Tuesday’s accident involved hostile fire.

Saturday’s accident involved a U.S. Air Force (USAF) F-15, which crashed at 3:15 a.m. Kabul time in Nawur, Ghazni. Both of those on the two-man fighter were killed. A spokseman for Ghazni’s governor stated that “The crash site was sealed off by coalition forces. Afghan police were not allowed to have access to this area.”

A board of officers will investigate the accident. “We mourn the loss of these two airmen and our thoughts are with their families, loved ones and their unit,” said a USAF statement.

Initially NATO did not identify the nationality of the pilots involved in today’s accident or the nationality or model of the aircraft involved. However the MOD of the United Kingdom later confirmed that the aircraft was an RAF Tornado GR4 which crashed on take-off. The crash occurred at 7:20 a.m. local time and the wreckage burned for five hours. Both pilots ejected safely but sustained minor injuries, they are currently being treated and assessed in hospital.

Propane Fire Pits Safe And Efficient Fire Pit Options

By Thomas Jones

Because of progresses in the last few decades in manufacturing, treatment and storage, and natural benefits over other petro products, propane is a low-risk option for your open-air fire pit or patio heater. For sure, if you smoke while handling a propane cylinder, or use matchsticks or lighters to test out for leaks, or pour lighter fluid or gasoline on your gas fire pit or open-air patio heater, all that safety might explode in smoke, together with several other things.

Propane cylinders stored in the house or subjecting them to extreme heats as well is a big no. For example, if propane seeps out from a cylinder stored in a cellar, the gas can float across the flooring to electrical switches, gas hubs or water heater and cause a blast or fire. Propane is heavier than air and collects at the lowest point in an enclosed quarter. Fixing links and other systems on a propane cylinder, open-air fire pit, or patio heater without ample training, or permitting kids to mess with any such systems, as well cuts safety.

Apart from that, millions use propane safely in an increasing number of ways in homes, manufacturing, agricultural, and transport. Over 10 million families make use of propane to fuel their furnaces, appliances, air conditioners, water heaters, open-air fire pits, grills, and patio heaters. In view of the fact that propane emits negligible emissions, it is frequently used in the house to power vehicles, like forklifts and ice resurfacing machines. In big cities, millions more make use of this environment friendly option for buses, taxis, as well as other service vehicles. Propane is one of the lightest, simplest hydrocarbons available.

In particular, as soon as it comes to monitoring valid safety measures, like what are said here or in open-air fire pit or patio heater operating instruction booklet, the likelihood of injury or loss of life as a direct consequence of a propane accident are very low. This is because of, if liquid propane leaks out, it vaporizes and disintegrates into the air. Given that it is released from a pressurized cylinder as a gas, it cannot be consumed like gasoline or alcohol fuels. Rigorous safety standards at present set by government for manufacturing of propane equipment and appliances. Propane tanks do not blow up, implode, rupture or disintegrate on their own. Actually, it takes a great deal of time and effort to make a propane tank blow up.

In contrast, to other crude oil products, propane is absolutely harmless and nontoxic; therefore, it does not contaminate land and water. Given that it does not cause danger and contaminate our atmosphere, the government does not impose regulation on the placement of propane tanks. Overall, you can have assurance using an open-air fire pit or patio heater fired by propane. Like with any dangerous material or activity, human mistake is a significant aspect we cannot all the time control or foresee. On the other hand, using known procedures and safety precautions in using and storing propane is supposed to reduce about any possibility of mishap or harm. To cut the long story short, propane fire pits are safe to use and are readily available online in a range of shapes and sizes opt for one, which suits your style and outside d cor.
