Spanish football: Juanfran signs one-year contract extension with Atlético Madrid

On Friday, via their official website, Spanish football club Atlético Madrid announced their defender Juanfran signed a one-year contract extension with the club. The new contract runs until June 30, 2019.
The Spanish defender joined the club in January 2011 and has featured in 325 matches for them. During his tenure at Atlético Madrid, Juanfran has won one Spanish LaLiga title, two UEFA Europa League trophies, one Super Copa de España, and one Copa del Rey. Juanfran has also played 22 matches in the Spanish jersey, participating in the 2012 and 2016 UEFA Euro tournaments as well as the 2014 FIFA World Cup. With the national team, Juanfran won the 2012 UEFA Euro tournament.
After signing the contract, 33-year-old Juanfran said, “Staying one more season at home makes me very proud and happy. I’m very excited about renewing one more year with the team of my life. My commitment and loyalty to this club make my heart just think about being a ‘rojiblanco’ player. I just can’t wait for next season to start to continue giving the maximum in each match and makes all the atléticos feel proud of me. Violence in Bangkok prompts closure of US embassy in Thailand

A string of anti-government protests in Bangkok yesterday resulted in at least one fatality, numerous others injured, and the temporary closure of several foreign embassies in Thailand.
Philip Crowley, a spokesperson for the US State Department, announced early Thursday morning that the US embassy would be closed to the public due to its location near the violence. The embassy will be operating with a reduced staff and will not offer American citizens services until the conflict is resolved. The British and Dutch embassies in Thailand also halted their services after the Thai government said that it would seal off the area.
The leader of the protests was fugitive Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, the radical leader of the militant Red Shirt movement. While giving interviews with foreign journalists, Sawasdipol appeared to have been shot in the head by a sniper. He was later taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment. One other protester, 25-year-old Chartchai Bualao, was killed in the incident, but it is still unclear as to who is responsible for the shooting.
Thai military forces moved in quickly to suppress the protesters just after the shooting, aiming to put down the opposition movement and secure the area in which they had barricaded themselves since early April. The Thai government declared a state of emergency for seventeen of the country’s 76 provinces in the wake of the protests.
This incident is only the latest in an ongoing series of violent outbreaks among protesters and the Thai government. The violence is a result of the belief of the protesters that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva took power through illegitimate means with the support of the Thai military.
Frank Lampard announces retirement from football

On Thursday, former English midfielder Frank Lampard announced retirement from football via Instagram, finishing a 21-year professional football career.
Lampard said, “After 21 incredible years, I have decided that now is the right time to finish my career as a professional footballer. […] at 38 I feel now is the time to begin the next chapter in my life.”
The 38-year-old midfielder made his debut in the mid-1990s and played for West Ham United and Swansea City before he joined London-based football club Chelsea F.C. in 2001 for £11million. Spending thirteen seasons with The Blues, Lampard scored 211 goals in all competitions for Chelsea, a club record, in nearly 650 appearances for the club. Lampard won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two Football League Cups, and one each of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
Lampard spent one season with Manchester City F.C. before moving to Major League Soccer club New York City Football Club. Lampard played 29 matches with the New York club scoring fifteen goals. Lampard has scored goals against 39 different Premier League clubs.
Lampard won 106 international caps for England, scoring 29 goals and featuring in three FIFA World Cups — 2006, 2010 and 2014 — before retiring from the national team in 2014. He made his international debut in 1999 against Belgium.
Lampard said he is to study for coaching qualifications. Lampard wore a blue coloured jersey for most of his career.

Football: Liverpool reaches agreement with Southampton FC to sign van Dijk

On Wednesday, English football club Liverpool FC announced reaching an agreement with Southampton FC to sign Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk. According to the reports, the Dutchman would cost Liverpool £75 million making him the most expensive defender of all time as well as the most expensive player in Liverpool’s history.
In an Instagram post, van Dijk wrote, “Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player!” The defender is to join Liverpool on January 1, when the transfer window opens. He is to wear number 4 jersey, the club announced on their website. The Reds tried to sign the Dutchman in summer after he formally requested a transfer.
van Dijk joined The Saints in 2015 for a fee of £13 million from Celtic and he penned a six-year contract with the club last year. Since 2014, Liverpool has signed five players from Southampton for about £171.5 million.
Liverpool is currently fourth in the Premier League table with 41 points in 21 games. They have conceded 24 goals in the league this season. Seventeen points behind league leaders Manchester City, Liverpool is scheduled to play Burnley in an away game on January 1, but would not be able to field van Dijk.
